Topic/Concept/Skill: Considering we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss this week, the topic will be
from his book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. We will be using this book to review what
weve learned about counting and numbers. Not only will we be able to use the book for addition
and subtraction but also for graphing, in particular bar graphs.
Related Standard: K.NS.2: Write whole numbers from 0 to 20 and recognize number words from
0 to 10. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count
of no objects). K.CA.1: Use objects, drawings, mental images, sounds, etc., to represent
addition and subtraction within 10. K.CA.3: Use objects, drawings, etc., to decompose numbers
less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, and record each decomposition with a
drawing or an equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1). [In Kindergarten, students should see
equations and be encouraged to trace them, however, writing equations is not required.]
Background: Throughout this week we are celebrating Dr. Seuss. With that being said I will be reading
the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. So having the knowledge of what happens in this book
we will use the knowledge they have already received throughout the year and apply it with a worksheet.
Knowing their numbers 1-20 will be important background information to have when doing this lesson.
Addition and subtraction will also be crucial knowledge to have as we do our lesson. The last background
information that the students will have to have for this lesson is how to do a bar graph. (Knowledge,
Blooms)
Main Objective of Instruction: One of the main objectives that I will have to keep in mind
throughout the instruction is that we are celebrating Dr. Seuss and his importance in Childrens
literature. Also, using Dr. Seuss and his book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, we will
review what weve learned about numbers, bar graphs, and addition and subtraction. Overall
this will be a way for the kids to review what theyve learned and they will have fun while they do
it.
Teacher Materials/Resources: The teacher in this lesson will need to make sure they have the
book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Along with this the teacher will also need to have
a worksheet for each member of the class. Colored Gold Fish and Dixie Cups will also be
something the teacher will need to complete this lesson.
Student Materials: The student will need to have their art boxes handy throughout this lesson.
In their art boxes the student has the crayons they need along with their pencil to fill in the
addition and subtraction problems.
Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach): The Anticipatory Set will be when I read to the
class Dr. Seuss One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. The students will know that we are
getting ready for the mathematics part of the day, which means that this reading is an
introduction to what we will be doing after the reading. While Im reading the book I will be
wearing the cat in the hat hat. This will be a big part in gaining their interest in what the
lesson is going to be about. In this anticipatory set I will be using (1. Stir the Class).
Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):
1. I will tell the students sit in front of the rocking chair, where they will be read the Dr. Seuss
book. (11:20-11:35)
2. I will send them back too their desks, where they will be released to go get their snack
(colored gold fish). (11:35-11:40)
3. Once they have their gold fish they I will instruct them to count how many they have of
each color. (11:40-11:55)
4. Once theyve done this I will show them how to use their crayons to color in the bar graph.
While Im done this I will use (2. I have a question, who has an answer?). This will show
me who is confused and who is understanding what we are doing. (11:55-12:05)
5. Once theyve colored in the bar graph I will help them through the addition problems on
the bottom of the worksheet. (12:05-12:15)
6. Once they have completed all of these steps I will allow them to eat their colored gold fish.
(12:15-12:20)
Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences: Four students in the classroom are in
the Title program and they will be receiving the help that they would be getting on a regular
bases. No other individuals in the classroom will be receiving any extra help that they normally
wouldnt receive.
Closure: When weve finished the lesson I will make sure each student is either done or we
have set up something related to when we will finish the worksheet individually in the hallway.
Evaluation of Learning: At the end of the day, we will sit together before the end of the day
announcements come on. When we do this we will discuss what the lesson was about and what
we learned. Also we will talk about Dr. Seuss and his importance in our classroom. Here we will
try to use (3. Ticket to leave)
Independent Practice: For independent practice the students will take home their addition
and subtraction flash cards and work on this with one of their family members or guardians.
Hopefully using One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish in our lesson will help them to do better
on their flashcards individualy.
