Investigations in Science 7 - March 23, 2016 What We Did This Week

This week students learned about Punnett squares and genetics vocabulary. They practiced terms like heterozygous, homozygous, allele, dominant, and recessive by completing Punnett squares and answering heredity questions. There will be a genetics and Punnett squares quiz on Wednesday. The announcements reminded students to bring supplies daily and noted upcoming topics on artificial selection and mutations, along with dates for spring break, quarter closing, and a PTA meeting.

What we did this week:

This week we spent time learning Punnett squares. Punnett squares show the
possible offspring from two parents for a specific trait. This section is filled with
a lot of vocabulary which we practice constantly in class. Below are the list of
vocabulary we have been working on while completing Punnett squares and
answering questions on heredity. There will be a quiz on genetics and Punnett
squares on Wednesday.

Heterozygous: hybrid, two different alleles for a trait (Rr)

Homozygous: purebred, two of the same alleles for a trait (RR or rr)

Allele: Different forms of a gene; can be dominant or recessive; one letter

passed from a parent

Dominant: this trait always shows up when an allele is present

Recessive: this kind of trait can be hidden by a dominant allele
