Day 1
Students will be in groups, at each table there will be a paper towel roll
for each of them, 2 pairs of scissors, and a stapler.
Students will cut their paper towel roll length wise down one side of it. So
that it could be a flat piece of cardboard.
Students will staple each end of the paper towel roll putting them back
together. After this they can stretch out the middle a little bit to make it
look more like a canoe.
Students will then one table at a time put away the scissors and stapler

and come grab a paper plate with paint on it, paint brushes, paper towels
and a water bucket from the teacher.
Once they are back to their desks they can paint their canoe however
they like.
Day 2
The students desks will be set up in groups again each desk having a
large piece of construction paper on it to use as a place mat, a water
bucket and a bucket of clay tools.
One group at a time the students will go up to the teachers desk to get
one baseball sized ball of clay.
Once they are all back to their desks have the students drop their ball of
clay on to the desk a few times to workout any air bubbles in the clay.
Instruct the students to roll the clay back into a ball.
Have the students pinch off the clay into six different pieces: three small
pieces for the head and arms, two medium pieces for the legs and one
large piece for the body.

6. Start with the head piece having them roll it into a ball.
7. Next have them form the body piece into an oval flattened a little looking
similar to a bar of soap.
8. Then teach them how to score and slip the pieces together.
9. Have them roll the arms and legs into proportional snake like pieces.
10.Have the students score and slip the limbs onto the body.
11.They can then carve eyes and a mouth into the doll or they can paint
them on later, give them the choice.
12.They now fold their doll to make it in a seated position.
13.After the first doll is completed have them carve their entails into its back
and write their name on the construction paper. They can then bring their
doll to a back table to dry.

14.Have the students come to the front for another piece of construction
paper and baseball sized ball of clay to make their second doll.
15.Repeat steps 3-13.
Day 3
1. The desks will be set up in groups still with a paper plate with paint on it, paint brushes, a
water bucket and paper towels.
2. The students can paint Lewis and Clark.
3. Once they are done have them place their dolls on a back table to dry.
4. Once they have put their dolls in the back they can clean up the paints and get construction
paper, scissors and glue.
5. They can now cut out different tools and supplies lewis and clark took on their journey, make
sure they are pretty small.
6. When they are done with this their dolls should be dry. The teacher will give each student
their canoe and dolls.
7. The students will now be instructed to glue (with a hot glue gun) Lewis and Clark sitting in
the canoe and glue (with Elmers School Glue bottle) the tools and supplies to the inside of
the canoe.
8. Then have the students glue (with a hot glue gun) their canoe with everything in it to a blue
