7th Grade Memoir Unit Writing Prompts-- Select one daily to which you will respond.

You can come back and continue


working on any prompt that you would like to further develop.

1. What items in your home do you consider to be family heirlooms? The


heirloom doesn't have to be valuable, so long as it is important to the
family.
2. Write about a family tradition. Write about your current traditions and
about what you are attempting to keep alive through those
traditions.
3. Write a list of "firsts" (i.e. first time you played a sport, completed an
activity, tasted a food, went somewhere, etc.) Select a few and write
about how you felt about what happened. (Use with Seventh
Grade by Gary Soto)
4. Think about your souvenirs and mementos. How did you come across
these items and why are they meaningful to you?
5. Write about a person that you love. What makes him or her special?
(Use with Oranges by Gary Soto)
6. Write about your religious tradition (or lack of religious tradition)
growing up. Continue by writing what you believe in your life today and
the personal philosophy you live by. (Use with Angelas Ashes
excerpt by Frank McCourt)
7. Write about a friendship you had at some point in your life. (Use with
Funeral and/or War by Ralph Fletcher)
8. Do you now have or have you had pets? Write about a specific memory
involving a pet. (Use with non-fiction article Murphy)
9. Do you know how your grandparents met? Find out and write about the
story.

a period of your childhood like pre-school or elementary school, or a
particular age like 4 or 6.

details about the place that make it special.
