The What: You will employ primary research methods to investigate the discourse
practices in a community of your choice and report your findings in an ethnographic
essay. The project should focus on explaining what kinds of texts and language the
people in the chosen discourse community use. For example, is there special slang the
members/workers/players use to communicate with each other? What kinds of texts
does the community use? What does this language say about the community? Finally,
what is the significance of this communitys existence? That is, of what consequence is
the community and its members?
Your Discourse Community analysis will have three major components:
1. Planning, 1st & 2nd Drafts: 20 points
2. Research Log and Interview Q&A: 30 points
3. Final Draft: 100 points
The Who: You are writing this this for someone who has never
encountered the discourse community you are describing and
analyzing. Thus, you will need to not only introduce what a
discourse community is using either the theoretical model of
either Swales or Gee, but also how your community functions
within the selected theoretical framework.
The Why: You have become part of the Purdue University academic community. Now
that weve taken the time to recognize our personal stories, were going to examine how
those stories coalesce into the communities we see all around us, especially those on
campus. By writing about one of your discourse communities here at Purdue University,
youll begin the next step in Writing Your Way Into Purdue.
The How: Your report should be at least 1000-1250 words long (not including the
Works Cited or References page) in MLA format. You are required to document and cite
your sources using MLA guidelines. Thus, you will need to create a Works Cited page.
