Portfolio Personal Statement
The best way to find your self is to lose yourself in the service of others. This
statement made by Gandhi is the prime truth. The principal mission of the social work profession
is to enhance social well-beings and to improve individual lives. My name is Navneet Dhaliwal.
I am currently completing my Bachelors in Social Work in the School of Social Work at Wayne
State University. I was born and raised in Canada by Indian-Sikh immigrant parents who taught
me strong traditional Indian values and beliefs regarding society, religion, and culture. One of the
main elements of the Sikh faith is seva, which is the selfless service carried out without the belief
of being rewarded with any sort of personal profit. Seva is considered to be the same concept as
volunteering. This element of the Sikh religion is the reason I have been involved in any
community I have had the opportunity to, be it the local hospital and nursing home, or the local
community of which I am a part of. This idea of seva and helping others was instilled in me
during my childhood and greatly influenced everything from my educational experience and
community work to my career path in life. A bachelors degree in Social Work will allow me to
fulfill my goal; the goal of helping others, along with working in a field that allows numerous
opportunities.
I have chosen social work as a profession because I look forward to the opportunity of
broadening my skills and knowledge as I move forward in my social work career. I want to be
the voice of the oppressed and vulnerable who fail to speak out because they fear no change will
come their way. I look forward to attaining insight on minorities and diverse populations. I
welcome any opportunity that comes my way as it will guide me, strengthen me, and prepare me
to become a confident, open-minded, and competent social worker. My long-term professional
goals include continuing to learn through personal experience, seek more opportunities to work
in different areas of social work, gain additional experience and ongoing education, work toward
becoming an effective social worker, become more competent in the social work field,
understand the challenges that come with the profession, and make an impact on whom I work
with. In order to be successful, I want to create a difference in the lives of others. I enjoy
working with vulnerable populations such as youth and the elderly because I understand the
dynamics and societal impacts that cause community dysfunction.
Becoming a social worker in this field will give me an opportunity to give back and
make a difference in the community I came from and the one I currently reside in. The qualities
that I believe a social worker should embrace are service to others, integrity, competency, selfworth, and a deep understanding of the core values and ethical principles. To help people in need
and to address social problems is the primary goal for social workers as it is always important
for social workers to promote service to others above self-interest. We depend on our knowledge,
values, and skills to help those in need of our services. Integrity is also a great quality to possess
as a social worker because it reflects honesty and dependability. Social workers should always be
honest, open-minded, and sincere in their work. Social workers should not only be competent in
the field but they should also be culturally competent as not everyone that they will work with
will be of the same population or race. Social workers should be mindful of the different
cultures and should continue to strive to increase their professional knowledge and skills.
Last but not least, a persons self-worth is a reflection of their understanding of others. A
social worker should first embrace their own self-worth and attitude toward themselves so that
they can respect the worth of others. I believe the most significant quality that a social worker
should possess is a clear and deep understanding and connection to the core values and their
ethical principles. The core values hold power and influence in the social work field and it is
extremely important that a social worker does not dishonor the profession or devalue the publics
trust in the profession. I have demonstrated these qualities in my professional, educational and
personal life by understanding the unique characteristics that everyone that I work with posses. It
is in my beliefs that with the right core values, one person make a true change.
Being a social worker means the ability to perform seva as a part of my career, something
which many people do not have the opportunity to do. Growing up in a close-knit Sikh
community has shown me the value of noble service to a community. All my professional
experiences and education thus far has prepared me for this in some shape or form. I will
continue to be the voice of many oppressed and vulnerable individuals; I hope one day I will be
capable and knowledgeable enough to actually make a change in some else life.
