Councilmember Todd Gloria of San Diego commented on California Governor Jerry Brown's announcement of a deal to raise the state minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2022. Gloria commended the Governor and Legislature for creating a bold proposal to help working families. While supporting the statewide increase, Gloria noted that San Diego previously approved raising its minimum wage to $11.50 per hour by 2017, which would help workers sooner than the state proposal. The future of San Diego's minimum wage increase will be decided by voters in June.

Councilmember Gloria Comments on State Minimum Wage Increase
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 28, 2016) Councilmember Todd Gloria today released the following statement regarding California Governor Jerry Browns announcement of a deal to raise the state minimum wage to $15 dollars per hour by 2022. I commend the Governor, the Legislature and advocates for working together to create this bold proposal for California. Todays historic announcement by Governor Brown is an affirmation of the leadership San Diego showed when our City passed a measure for higher wages in 2014 to help working families make ends meet, said Councilmember Gloria. In 2014 the San Diego City Council approved a City-wide minimum wage increase to $11.50 and five earned sick days. The measure was subjected to a referendum and will be left to the voters to decide. The state currently provides up to three earned sick days for workers and additional days are not a part of the state-wide wage proposal. The City Council measure raises the minimum wage to $10.50 per hour immediately and to $11.50 per hour on January 1, 2017. If enacted, the statewide measure would not reach these wages until 2018. Workers are in need of these wages now and it is important that we secure a local increase in order to help San Diegans pay for rent, food and other everyday household expenses. The City of San Diego minimum wage increase will be decided by the voters and has been placed on the June 7 ballot as Proposition I. ###
