Customization Guide

elementary OS 0.1: Jupiter


With elementary, weve simplified things to better suit the average user. A trade-off we made
for simplicity was customizability. However, we really just hid some of the customization
options by default; you can change everything as much as youd like, and were going to show
you how to do each thing in only five steps!

Panel
We set the panel up in a way that makes sense, but what if you want to tweak it? Right-clicking
doesnt get you very far by default. Thats not hard to change, I promise!

Hit Alt+F2 to open the Run Application window.


Type gconf-editor and hit Enter to open the Configuration Editor app.
In the folders on the left, navigate to /Apps/panel/global/.
Find the key titled locked_down and uncheck its check box.
Right-click the panel to customize away!

Applications menu
Every graphical application installed in elementary will put itself in the right category in the
Applications menu. What about putting a shortcut in there manually? We got you covered.

Open the Software Center from the Applications menu or the dock.
Type alacarte, then install the single Main Menu app that shows up.
Hit Alt+F2 to open the Run Application window.
Type alacarte and hit Enter to open the menu editor.
Customize away!

The Desktop
We dont encourage you to store every random file that you recently played with in a cluttered
mess underneath your open applications, but who are we to stop you? Heres how to get
desktop icons on elementary:

Hit Alt+F2 to open the Run Application window.


Type gconf-editor and hit Enter to open the Configuration Editor app.
In the folders on the left, navigate to /Apps/nautilus/preferences/.
Find the key titled show_desktop and check its check box.

The Dock
We set the dock up to be as simple as possible, but want to change how it looks or behaves?

Hit Alt+F2 to open the Run Application window.


Type gconf-editor and hit Enter to open the Configuration Editor app.
In the folders on the left, navigate to /Apps/docky-2/Docky/Items/DockyItem/.
Find the key titled ShowDockyItem and check its check box, then close the window.
Look! A Docky icon on your dock! Right-click it to configure the dock.
