Chapter5cfu Methods

This document describes various teaching strategies and how they connect to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines. It includes a table listing strategies like KWL charts, guides, glossaries, highlights, models, call sticks, goals, think-pair-share, choice, and gallery walks. For each strategy, it provides a description, example of classroom use, and the most applicable UDL guideline. It discusses how a supplementary video about the content provided too much additional reading material rather than just pausing to discuss the key points.

Check for Understanding: Chapter 5 Choosing Wisely: Teaching

Methods with a UDL Spin

Strategy

Description
(in your own words)

How could you use

this strategy in the
classroom?

UDL Connection
(Which guideline is
most applicable?)

(real life example)

KWL

A chart that is used

throughout the
learning process
where the student
states what they
know before, what
they want to know
while completing the
project, and what
they learned after
completing the
project.

This could be
useful in a theme
based project where
the guidelines are
very general and
each student can
pick an area of
interest. It would
show their thought
process as they
create their
project.

Engagement:
provide options
for selfregulation

Guide

A supplementary tool
which aids students
in following a
lecture or lesson by
providing them with
a visual aid which
correlates to the
lesson being taught.

This is for
students who learn
by reading and
processing
information to help
guide them through
a lecture based
lesson.

Representation:
Provide options
for
comprehension

Glossary

A list of relevant
vocabulary and
definitions that
appear in the
lesson.

Used for any

subject to give
students reference
when they cannot
remember a term.
Especially
important for ELL
students, can be
modified to provide
both languages to
support their
understanding.

Representation:
Provide options
for language,
mathematical
expressions, and
symbols

Highlights

The use of color or

bolded words to help
with understanding
and showing the
relevance or
importance of terms
in relation to the
content.

This is best used

Representation:
to break down

smaller pieces,
such as the
different parts of
a math problem and
what each piece is
labeled. By giving
each part in both
words and visuals
as their own color,
connections can be
made.

Models

Physical
representations of
concepts which are
unable to be
realistically
brought into the
classroom,
preferably to scale.

topics which cannot for perception
be seen without
representation and
thus are modeled to
aid understanding.

Call Sticks

A way to fairly and

randomly select
students to answer
questions or
complete other
tasks.

This is best used

in answering
questions, but can
be used for various
tasks students can
perform throughout
the day.

Engagement:
Provide options
for recruiting
interests

Goals

The results that are

attained by
completing one or a
series of tasks.

Students should
always be reminded
why they are
completing any
assignment to
promote relevance,
especially with
homework.

Action &
Expression:
Provide options
for executive
functions

Think-PairShare

A three step method

where after coming
up with ideas
individually,
students are placed

Similar to a turn
and talk but more
elaborate, I think
this could be used
when presenting

their thoughts.

students with
persistence
problems that they
have not been
explicitly taught
how to solve. In
this way, students
can help each other
and they must be
able to explain
their thought
process, a skill
which is not often
focused on.

Choice

Students are able to

choose how they
represent the
information obtained
or how they reach
their goal.

With laptops
available in many
schools now,
students have the
option to read a
text book or have a
story read aloud to
them as they go. It
is also popular to
have many options
for how students
practice skills,
such as in the pick
3 rotation I
observe at my
internship.

Action &
Expression:
Provide options
for physical
action

Gallery Walk

Students lay out

their projects on
their desks and roam
the classroom
discussing with
their peers about
the assignment.

I think a gallery
walk is useful for
lessons where
personal opinion
shapes the results,
such as students
creating shape
poetry.

Engagement:
Provide options
for sustaining
effort and
persistence

Video reflection: Please describe the difference between video 1 and video 2.
Which video helped you to complete this assignment? Why? Please describe.

The two videos were the same except video two paused and provided reading material
and resources which further elaborated on the content being listed. Although it did help
to see the definitions as I am not a student who learns through videos, it felt like almost
too much information as a whole web page was provided. I believe the best aid for this
video was the textbook itself and the colorful UDL guidelines chart.
