ProblemSet - Shear Joints

This document provides instructions for 4 problems related to shear joints for a problem set assignment due on February 12, 2010. Problem 1 asks to determine the load value P for a riveted joint given the rivet diameter and allowable shear stress. Problem 2 asks to calculate factors of safety for different failure modes given the tensile shear load and bolt specifications. Problem 3 asks to determine the factor of safety for a lap joint connection between two steel bars bolted together. Problem 4 asks to find the shear load and stress on bolts and maximum bending stress in a plate for a bolted connection given dimensions.

Problem Set Shear Joints

Due Friday 2/12/2010

Problem 1
Determine the value of the load P for the riveted joint shown in Figure P15.28.
Design Assumption: The allowable rivet stress in shear is 100 MPa.
Given: d = 90 mm

Figure P15.28
Problem 2
The figure shows a connection that employs three SAE grade 5 bolts. The tensile shear load on
the joint is 5400 lbf. The members are cold-drawn bars of AISI 1020 steel. Find the factor of
safety for each possible mode of failure.

Problem 3
A beam is made up by bolting together two cold-drawn bars of AISI 1018 steel as a lap joint, as
shown in the figure. The bolts used are ISO 5.8. Ignoring any twisting, determine the factor of
safety of the connection.

Problem 4
Find the total shear load on each of the three bolts for the connection shown in the figure and
compute the significant bolt shear stress. Find the second moment of area of the 8-mm plate on a
section through the three bolt holes, and find the maximum bending stress in the plate.
