Dear Parents,

APRIL 2016 NEWSLETTER

All students will be taking the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for
College and Careers) English Language Arts (ELA) and Math state assessments. In addition,
8th graders will take Colorado Measure of Academic Success (CMAS) tests for Science.
These tests will be an opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to meet the
Colorado State Model Content Standards. Doing well on these tests is important for
students and for the school. You can help your child by making sure they are at school for
testing and by taking time to do a few important things at home:

Please be sure your child is to school on time. Rushing and worrying about being late
could be distracting.

Talk to your child about the tests. Children should know that it will test their skills in
reading, writing, and math, and for 8th graders, also their science skills.

Encourage your child to do his or her best but not worry about the test. Confident kids do
better on tests.

Remind your child to carefully follow directions, take time to select the most correct
answer, and check over work before turning it in. Good work habits will enhance student performance.

Make sure your child gets a good nights sleep on the days before testing. Kids do better
if they are rested.

Be sure your child has a good, nourishing breakfast and has plans for a healthy lunch.
Test taking is hard work and requires lots of energy.

Ask your child about the testing at the end of each day

Thank you for your support during testing time.

Sincerely,
Todd Bissell
Principal

Students, please stop by the Main Office to let us know what kind of pizza you
would like.

In the classroom, Ben is so positive and encouraging with the

students. When students work through difficult tasks while
playing their instruments he is genuinely excited and
encouraging them to take on the next challenge. Ben is a
great example of how a teacher can differentiate instruction
and creates individual experiences for each of his students in
his classroom.
Ben puts in time and effort to make daily classroom
experiences as well as after school events a place students can
take risks and shine. On many occasions Ben has modeled his
own talent through playing along with the band students as
well as arranging music for the band or choir to perform. As
a teammate, Ben is reliable, flexible, supportive, and always
willing to help out when needed. He is an asset to our school
showcasing how Tigers ROAR through music. Thanks for all
your efforts!

In working with Mrs. Saless, it is clear that she has a heart for
all the students at EMS. Mrs. Saless also cares a great deal
about the staff at EMS. She truly wants the best educational
environment for everyone. This is evident in the lead Mrs.
Saless has taken in technology. She wants to provide students
and teachers opportunities to use their iPads and technology
for educational purposes. As a SPED teacher she consistently
challenged her students and assisted them gain proficiencies
across the board. As the CFS teacher, she has engaged
students in lifetime activities in cooking and sewing. The
students and staff enjoyed Cupcake Wars. Her classes are
enhanced and enriched through these types of activities.
Mrs. Saless, thank you for all you do for the students and staff
and EMS. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!

From the Counseling Office

There are ways for your student to peacefully settle conflicts without fighting, without running
away, and without going against their feelings or beliefs. Resolving conflicts peacefully helps keep
your student safe, feeling good, and helps them learn respect for others.

Following are some strategies your son or daughter can use to help them solve conflicts peacefully:

First, calm down and decide whether there really is a significant problem, then think of
solutions, weigh the results and choose a plan.

When meeting with the other person to settle the problem, be a good listener. Avoid
interruptions and ask questions after the other person has presented his or her side. Repeat what
you have heard to make sure you understand what the problem seems to be. Present your side of
the conflict. Then negotiate a solution. It is sometimes very helpful to have a third person who
can be impartial to help brainstorm ideas and develop solutions. This is where your students
school counselor can help.
