Model Exam Question Paper

This document appears to be a model examination for the subject Mechanics of Structures - II. It contains 5 questions in Part B worth 16 marks each, and 10 short questions in Part A worth 2 marks each. Part A questions cover topics like drawing bending moment and shear force diagrams, defining key terms, and describing structural concepts. Part B questions involve more in-depth problems, such as deriving the Euler buckling load for a column, analyzing statically indeterminate beams, and calculating stresses and loads in beams.

A hollow cylindrical cast iron column whose external diameter is

200mm and has a thickness of 20 mm is 4.5 m long and is fixed at both
ends. Calculate the safe load by Rankine's formula using a factor of
safety of 2.5. Take the crushing strength of material as 550 N/mm2. And
rankines constant as 1 / 1600. Find also the ratio of Eulers to rankine's
load. Take E = 150 Gpa.

general loading cases.

3. A beam of size 150 mm wide

300 mm deep is simply supported

and carries a uniformly distributed load of 19 KN/m over the entire

span. Calculate the maximum span of the beam. If the maximum
bending stress is not to exceed 103 Mpa. With this span calculate the
maximum central load the beam can carry if the bending stress is not
to exceed the limit given below.
