Polybag Costing
Poly bags, also known as polythene bags, have a variety of uses in many industries. In the apparel,
garment, sew goods, fabric and related industries, poly bags are use to protect goods during
shipment from dirt, dust, and moisture.
In particular to garments, the material used may be of LDPE, PP or VINYL. In these LDPE can be
recyclable, and others cannot be recycled.
Heat sealed Polybags are primarily used for dry cleaning and garment storage.
Self Adhesive Bags can be re sealed even after opening also. Button, zip lock also can close the bag
after opening once. Slider zip lock is actually meant for to work with gloves also, but it also gives
good feel on the brand when it is presented with the garments. Hangers can also be welded to the
poly bags for socks, under garments, suits or shirts etc.
Gazetted polybags are made to accommodate any rise in the packaging, like shirt collar or shoulder
projection at blazers etc.,
Bags which consists hangers, buttons, zip lock are generally more than 3 mil thickness, able to
withstand the load near to hanger area, or the stress applied near to the buttons etc.
GAUZING SYSTEM / THICKNESS OF POLY BAG
In general, 3 units of measurement will be used for polybags,
1) Mil
2) Microns
3) Gauge
Mil:
This system is widely used for the polybags in garment industry. Mil is identified as thousand of an
Inch. 1 mil means the thickness is of 1/1000 of an inch.
Micron:
Gauge:
It is universally accepted system for packaging polybags. 1 gauge is equal to 1/ 1,00,000 of an inch.
So, 1 mil is equal to 100 gauge.
Conversion:
For Multi Colour Print (Text/ Design) : Add Multiples of 10 Paisa per Colour per unit
For Perforated Poly bag : Add 20 – 40 Paisa Depending upon the slits or opening
For Self Adhesive Tape : Add Multiples of 5 Paisa per inch of the tape
For Hanger : Add Rs. 2 – 4 (Varies depend upon design, Material Etc.,)
These bags are popular due to its glossy finish in the surface, and excellent strength, great tear
strength. Generally these will be made with 3mil and above only. These types are generally available
with much detailing in the design. Sometimes these are made with seams and stitches for aesthetic
finishes or even a normal nylon zipper also be attached. There are no specific guidelines for costing
of these products.
The cost of these products will be mainly depends on the style provided, design to be printed, and
the type of sealing mechanism (Adhesive tape, Button, Ziploc Etc.,).
EXAMPLE
A PP Polybags having 17” width, 30” Length, 180 Gauge, Consisting of self adhesive tape. And Cost of
PP is Rs.90
= Rs 0.85 Paisa

The minimum order quantity for polybags normally would be around 5,000 units for LDPE, PP bags.
In case of gazette type of polybags, it will be around 25,000 to 30,000 units. But it can also be
negotiable it case, there is no special designs.
LEAD TIME
The commonly used size polybags will be generally available, so those can be procured within 2 days.
In case of gazetted, printed, with sealing mechanism and attachments will increase the lead time up
to 10-12 days, depend upon the buyer.

While ordering the polybags, the following specifications should be mentioned, inorder to get the
correct type of material.
