Assignment-[Chapter: 05]

Illumination:-Types of lamps, fixtures & reflectors, illumination schemes

for domestic, industrial & commercial premises, Lumen requirements for
different categories.
Grid connected systems, system configuration, working principles, limitations,
..
1) Classify electric drives and state the factors affecting selection of drive.
2) State the methods of speed control of shunt motor. Explain flux control
Method with circuit diagram .
3) Draw speed torque characteristics of following motors.
1. D.C. Shunt motor, 2 D.C. Series motor, 3.Three Phase Induction motor.
4) Suggest suitable A.C. and D.C. drives for following applications. Give reasons for the

same. 1. Lifts 2. Blower 3. Rolling mills 4. Lathe.

4) A 240volt d.c. shunt motor has a field resistance of 400 and armature resistance of 0.1.
The armature current is 50 Amp and speed is 900 rpm. Calculate additional resistance
required in the field to increase the speed to1000 rpm for the same armature current.
Assume a straight line magnetization curve.
5) Explain different methods of controlling speed of three phase induction motors.
6) What do you understand by load equalization .Derive the expression for motor torque when load
increases and decreases.

7) Explain Types of enclosures used in electric motor.

8) A 25H.P,500V,4 pole ,50Hz cage induction motor with delta connected stator takes full load
current of 30A and has a slip of 4%.The impedance per phase is 3.5 .Calculate the starting
torque and starting current taken from the supply if the motor is started by
(i)direct Switching
(ii)a Star-delta starter
(iii)An auto-transformer with 70% tap
9) Suggest suitable A.C. and D.C. drives for following
applications. Give reasons for the same.
1. Pump 2. Blower 3. Hoist 4. Excavator.

10) Justify the following statement with explanation

(i) D C series motors never start without load
(ii) D C series motors are used where huge starting torque is required
11) Explain torque slip curve of 3 phase induction motor.
12) Explain starting methods for synchronous motor.
13) Compare slip ring induction motor with squirrel cage induction motor. Why double cage
