Summary of Data Collection Methods

The teacher asked students to brainstorm environmental issues they were concerned about. Many students brought up issues with plastic litter and pollution, having seen trash on beaches and thrown out of car windows. The teacher introduced books about plastic waste to further student understanding. The class will work on a social action project to analyze the causes of plastic pollution, develop global awareness through learning about plastic waste in other countries, and collaborate with a state parks program to learn more about impacts on ocean life. By the end of the project, students will be able to describe plastic pollution problems and impacts, ways to reduce plastic use, and educate others through art, plays, and persuasive writing.

Summary of Data Collection Methods - Final Plan:

At the beginning of our unit on Sharing the Planet I asked students, with their parents
help, to brainstorm a list of questions and concerns they had about ways that humans
impact their environment and how we could create positive change in our world. We
brainstormed ideas such as clean water, help for the homeless and orphans, and other
ideas. One student had recently seen a program about plastic in our oceans and this
prompted students to begin a discussion about litter. One student said I saw someone
throw trash out the window on the freeway. Another stated I saw a lot of trash on the
beach last week-end! One student had recently traveled overseas and was shocked at
how much trash she had seen in the streets. This seemed to be the area they were most
focused so we continued to brainstorm and talk about the issue during our morning
meeting. I began to bring in literature on the subject. Two of their favorites so far have
been One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of the Gambia by
Miranda Paul and Im not a Plastic Bag by Rachel Hope Allison. I also created a webquest to help students understand issues mentioned in the books such as the Great
Pacific Garbage Patch.
At the end of the social action project we will have accomplished the following:
1. Analyze the root causes
a. By examining the history of plastic. For example, when did we begin
using plastic bags and bottles and why?
b. Important usages for plastic such as syringes for injections.
c. Important laws and regulations created around plastic usage.
2. Develop world-mindedness
a. I included the book entitled One Plastic Bag cited above is a story about
a woman who tackled the problem of plastic bag waste in Gambia to
show that this is a world-wide problem.
b. We have investigated the different garbage patches in the oceans and
analyzed sea turtle migration to determine if turtles do migrate through
them.
3. Collaborating with a Community Partner
a. Our community partner is the Outreach Program through the California
Department of Parks and Recreation. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?
page_id=27229
b. They will be visiting our school during the first week of May to provide the
following programs.
i. The Marine Debris & Recycling Program
ii. The Marine Mammal Life Program
At the culmination of the project students will be able to describe in more detail the
problem of plastic litter and why and how it ends up in the oceans. They will be able
describe the impact of plastic debris on different ocean animals. They will analyze ways
to reduce their use of plastic bags and bottles and create art projects to educate others
about this important issue. The will write a short play designed to educate others about
this issue. They will also sell their arts and crafts and re-usable bags they have made to
earn money to donate to an organization working on this issue.

Student artifacts will include

1. Journal entries throughout the project
2. Art project of their own design using either used plastic bags and/or plastic
bottles
3. A play designed to educate our kinder and first grade students about littering
4. A persuasive text based on common core writing standards to inform others
about what they have learned and to encourage them to take action on the issue
the student believes is most important.
