The document discusses the differences between using "will" and "going to" when talking about the future. "Will" is used when deciding to do something at the moment of speaking, based on new information. "Going to" is used when a plan or intention was already formed before speaking. Examples are provided of using each form correctly, such as "I'll have a coke please" versus "I'm going to travel round the world." The document also notes that "will" can be used to make predictions with no present connection, while "going to" implies the present sets up the future action. An exercise tests the reader on choosing the right future form in different situations.

FUTURE: WILL VS GOING TO

Will or going to?

WILL

GOING TO

Generally we use will when we

decide to do something at the
time of speaking. Something is
new to you (for instance
information you didn't know) and
you decide to do something
about it just then.

Going to: when we have already

decided to do something we use
going to instead. It is generally
something that we intend to do in
the future.

EXAMPLES :

I am going to travel round the

world with all your money!
'There is an international football
match on TV. Are you going to
watch it?' 'No I am going to eat out
with someone.'
'I decided to make a party.' 'Who
are you going to invite?'

I left the door open...I'll go and

close it then.
I am too tired just now. I think I'll
call a taxi.
Would you like something to
drink?' 'I'll have a coke please'

Otherwise, if we are
predicting...saying what we think
will happen with no connection
with the present use will.

EXAMPLES :

We also use going to when we

say what we think will happen in
the future. Usually there is a clear
situation in the present that
makes us to be sure about what
will happen.

'Do you think it will rain?' 'No idea!'

EXAMPLES :
'Look at those clouds...I think it's
going to rain soon!' Yes.'

'You will meet a tall dark man

soon...'

'I don't feel well...I am going to

throw up!

Look at that kid....He is going to

fall in that hole!
