First Exam 1st Spring 2007

This document contains 3 practice problems for a foundation engineering exam. Problem 1 asks students to determine a single design internal friction angle value for a sand deposit based on standard penetration resistance values at various depths. Problem 2 involves calculating the factor of safety against shear failure for a retaining wall base. Problem 3 asks students to calculate the load capacity of a square footing in stiff clay based on undrained shear strength parameters and a desired factor of safety. Formulas for calculating bearing capacity and factors are also provided.

Problem # 1: (6 points)

For a sand deposits of density of 120 pcf, the field standard penetration resistance N60 is given on
the table below. Determine a single design internal friction angle, φ ’, value for this stratum?

Problem # 2: (8 points)

The base of a long retaining wall is 3.00 m wide and 1.00 m below the base level. The vertical
and horizontal components of the base reaction are 282 kN/m and 102 kN/m respectively. The
eccentricity of the base reaction is 0.36 m. If the appropriate shear strength parameters for the
foundation soil are C’=0.0 and φ ’=35o and a unit weight of the soil is 18 kN/m3, determine the
factor of safety against shear failure? Ignore the self weigh of the footing.

Problem # 3: (6 marks)

A footing of 3.00 m square is located at a depth of 2.0 m in stiff clay; the saturated unit weight is
21 kN/m3. The undrained shear strength parameters being, Çu=120.0 kN/m2 and φ =0o. For a
factor of safety of 3.00 with respect to shear failure, what load the footing could carry. Ignore the
self weigh of the footing.
