HYPERGEOMETRIC DISTRIBUTION - Daniel Bezalel Garcia, John Marlo Nazareno

The hypergeometric distribution describes the probability of selecting x successes from a sample of n draws, without replacement, from a finite population of size N that contains k successes. It is used when sampling without replacement from a finite population with a known number of successes. The mean is equal to nk/N and the variance is equal to nk(N-k)(N-n)/(N^2(N-1)). The hypergeometric distribution approximates the binomial distribution when the sample size n is small compared to the population size N.

Hypergeometric Distribution
DEFINITION
- Hypergeometric distribution is a
discrete probability distribution
that describes the probability of
selecting from the k items labeled
successes and n-x failures from N-k
items labeled failures when a random
sample of size n is selected from N
items.

Hypergeometric Distribution

-

wherein,
k is the total number of success in the
population.
x is the total number of success where
you are interested, success after n trials.
N is the number of population.
n is the number of sample/trials derived
from N

Hypergeometric Distribution
PROPERTIES:
- A random sample of size n is
selected without replacement from N
items.
- Of the N items, k may be classified
as success and N-K are classified as
failures.
- No negative or positive connotation.

Hypergeometric Distribution
MEAN

To find the mean of the hypergeometric
distribution, we write the expected value as,

Bring out all the constant values from the

summation and cancel x we get,

Let y=x-1; x=y+1

When x=1; y=0
x=n; y=n-1

Hypergeometric Distribution
Recall the Binomial-Multinomial
Theorem which states that,
Then a = k-1, b = N-k, m = n-1
and that is,

VARIANCE

To find the variance, we will start

by getting the expected value
of ,
Using the same process in
obtaining the mean,

Distribution
There is an interesting relationship

between the hypergeometric distribution

and binomial distribution. Say, if n is sma
compared to N, the nature of the N items
changes very little in each draw. So the
binomial distribution can be used to
approximate the hypergeometric
distribution when n is small compared to
In fact, the approximation is good when
Thus, if we set , then the mean of the
hypergeometric distribution coincides wi
the mean of the binomial distribution, an

EXAMPLE
Lots of 45 components each are
considered unacceptable if they
contain 5 or more defectives. The
procedure for sampling a lot is to
select 10 components at random and
reject the lot if defective was found.
What is the probability of exactly 1
defective is found in the sample if
there are 5 defectives in the entire lot?
