High school teacher teaches much more than English

Wendy Frantz transitions from a troubled student to a favorite teacher
Its 6:00am on a Monday morning as Mrs. Frantz is abruptly wakes up
from her blaring alarm clock. Instead of hitting the snooze button, she gets up
and begins rehearsing that days lesson plans as she gets ready for another day of
work. Its now 8:00am and her students begin trickling into her classroom for first
period. This week her class is reading Beowulf, not exactly a favorite amongst
teenagers. Instead of suffering alongside my students and forcing them to write
papers on a subject they find less than interesting, I like to come up with ideas on
how to make the class memorable, Mrs. Frantz described.

In this particular instance, she had the students push all of the desks to the back of
the classroom and had them act out a typical day in a medieval mead hall and
pretend they are the characters from the story. It was great seeing them having
fun and really getting excited about learning, she gushed.
While Mrs. Frantz, 49 currently experiences a great amount of success and
happiness in her life, the journey getting there was not an easy one. In explaining
how she overcame past challenges, Mrs. Frantz has always looked for anyway to
help someone else out.

Early Life
Mrs. Frantz was born in a small town in Michigan. She lived in a nice
home with her well-educated parents and brother and sister. From the outside
they seemed like the perfect family, and they were, until her parents abruptly
divorced when Mrs. Frantz was only eight years old.

Her parents quickly went from being in a loving

relationship to refusing to speak to one another. They
took their hatred of each other out on their three young
children. They forced their children (all of whom were
under the age of 10) to choose which parent they

wanted to live with, with the ultimatum that they could never speak to the parent
they didnt choose to live with again. Her sister chose to live with their father and
Mrs. Frantz and her brother decided to move across the country to Phoenix,
Arizona with their mother and soon-to-be stepfather.

Mrs. Frantz, however quickly grew to regret this decision. My stepfather
was extremely abusive towards me. He used to scream me at me until I was so
hysterical I could barely breathe, she described. Her teachers sent her to the
school guidance counselor to try and figure out what she was acting out. Mrs.
Frantz confided in the guidance counselor and discussed her horrific home
situation. The guidance counselor proceeded to contact Mrs. Frantzs father,
requesting that she live under his primary custody. He reluctantly agreed, and
Mrs. Frantz moved back to Michigan.

Overcoming Obstacles
Once I moved back with my father things
began to get better. I brought my grades up and was
able to get into one of my top choice colleges, the
University of Wisconsin, Mrs. Frantz explained. She
decided early on that she wanted to become a teacher
so she could help students like herself thrive in school
regardless of any outside issues that may be
interfering with their progress. When I first began

student teaching during my final year at Wisconsin I knew I had made the right
career decision, Mrs. Frantz said. She enjoys speaking with her students and
offering them guidance on any problems they may be facing.

Family
Mrs. Frantz also tries to instill the values of helping others with her own
two teenage daughters. As a family we frequently devote their spare time to doing
charity work, our oldest daughter was

husband, Paul stated. Mrs. Frantz also makes

sure that her children always feel that they are
growing up in a home filled with love and support.
My husband and I make sure we never have an

argument in front of our children, and if an issue is occurring in our household,

we all sit down together as a family and discuss how we can overcome the
problem, Mrs. Frantz described. As of now my children are thriving, my
students are thriving and I truly couldnt be happier, she exclaimed.
