Learning Log 6 - Academic Integration Lesson

This document provides a lesson plan for a physical education activity for 1st grade students. The objectives are for students to practice addition and subtraction of numbers 1-10, and to demonstrate locomotor skills like skipping, hopping, and leaping. The teacher will blow a whistle to indicate how many students should be in each group, and may later add or subtract from that number, requiring students to solve problems as they form their groups. Modifications allow for varying the activity based on student abilities and needs.

Learning log 3
Grade Level: 1
Lesson Objectives:
Academic Objectives:
Students will be able to add and subtract numbers 1-10
Physical Component objectives:
Students will be able to properly demonstrate various
locomotor skills (skip, leap, hop, etc.)
Equipment requirements:
Whistle or horn
Description of Activity:
Teacher will begin by telling students they will be forming groups
based on the number of whistles the teacher blows. Students should
be in an open area with room to move around without running into
each other. The teacher should start off by blowing small numbers on
the whistle so that students can get the hang of the game. For
example, teacher will blow the whistle 3 times, then students will form
groups of 3. The teacher will instruct the students to move using
different locomotor skills such as skipping, hopping, etc. The students
must properly perform the skill while moving to form their groups.
Once students are comfortable with forming groups based on the
number of whistles they hear, the teacher will move onto bigger
numbers and addition/subtraction problems. For example, teacher will
blow whistle a certain number of times then say aloud minus or
plus then blow the whistle whichever number they choose. For
example, if the teacher blows the whistle 4 times, then says plus and
then blows the whistle 3 times, the students will have to add the
numbers they hear together and form groups of 7 students. If there are
an odd number of students and some are left out, they can come to
the teacher and choose the next number or equation for the class,
then they can join back in after that round. By allowing the students to
come up with the equations, they are still involved and are using their
mathematical skills to create equations themselves.
Modifications:
If the teacher does not want to blow a whistle they can use
any rhythm instruments or clap their hands instead.

If you have students with hearing impairments, you can

hold up flash cards with the numbers on them so the
students can visually see the amount of whistles being
blown each time
For younger students you can use the flashcards if they are
having trouble mentally adding the numbers by the
sounds.
For older students, you can incorporate multiplication and
division.
For advanced locomotor skills you assign pathways for
students to travel in (zig zag, straight, curved). You can
also assign different speeds (slow, fast).
