LP 2 Physical Science Properties of Matter - Frazier

This lesson plan aims to teach students about the properties of matter. It includes essential questions about properties, matter, and mass. Students will learn vocabulary words like property, matter, float, sink, flexible and rigid through activities and experiments. They will predict and observe whether objects float or sink in water, and identify objects as rigid or flexible. Pre- and post-tests assess students' understanding of the vocabulary and concepts.

Lesson: Physical Science - Properties of matter

Essential Questions
What are properties?
What is matter?
What is mass?
Why do objects have different properties?
Learner Outcomes (Instructional Objectives)
Students will be able to:
Define, describe, and explain that physical items have different properties
Define property, matter, and mass
Demonstrate correct sign production of vocabulary words
Demonstrate the ability to read the vocabulary words
Demonstrate correct pronunciation and articulation of vocabulary words
Tennessee State Standards
Content Standard: The student will investigate the characteristic properties of matter.
Alternate Learning Expectation (ALE): PS. 2A. Recognize that objects have observable properties that can change over time and
under different conditions.
Alternate Performance Indicators (API)
1. Describe objects according to simple properties (e.g., shape, size, color, weight, texture, floating, sinking, flexibility)
Vocabulary
Property / Properties are used to describe an object. You can see what an object looks like, feels like, smells like, and etc.
Mass amount of matter in an object.
Matter has mass and takes up space, an object, you can touch it.
Float stay above or at the surface of the water. Swimming with arm floaties or a tube.
Sink going under the water. Throwing rings in the pool and diving for them.
Flexible bendable, can bend and not break into two pieces
Rigid hard, does not bend or change shape

Developmental Activities
Float or Sink Experiment
Students are given the float or sink worksheet (see attached worksheet objects will be prewritten by the teacher)
and a variety of objects: straw, paperclip, penny, paper, clip, and ring. They will cut out the words and place them in
the appropriate area, either float or sink. Then, they will test their predictions by placing each object in their bowl of
water and record the results. Then we will discuss the results (questions below)
Rigid or Flexible Experiment
Students are given a worksheet (see attached) and a variety of objects: pencil, straw, eraser, paperclip, and clip.
Students will examine each object and place it in the right area. Then we will discuss the results.
What did you see happen?
Did the objects change?
How do the objects feel, smell, look etc.?
Were your predictions right?
Conclusion
Post Test (Redo pretest with additional questions)
Test students ability to read and or sign the vocabulary terms using correct sign and speech.
Test students ability to give a new example of the vocabulary terms through, sign, speech, or drawing.
Record Data
Addressing Learners Diverse Needs
Formative/Summative Assessment
Formative The pretest is used to see what students already know and to help guide the lesson. In addition, students
will show understanding during the lesson by answer questions and giving examples in various communication modes
throughout the lesson as well as apply what they have learned by performing experiments.
Summative - Posttest reading, signing, speech articulation and pronunciation of vocabulary words and giving their
own examples from memory to the teacher.
Data Analysis and Reflection on Planning/Instruction; Plans for Re-teaching (as applicable)

The data collection of classwork, pretest and posttest (the students formative and summative assessments results) will
determine if additional teaching is needed for mastery of objectives and standard.
