From Eqs. (1) and (2) : Euler Turbine Equation

The document discusses the Euler Turbine Equation, which relates the temperature and pressure ratios across a turbine or compressor to changes in the rotational speed and momentum of mass. The equation shows that angular momentum increases for compressors and decreases for turbines. Conclusions are that changes in total enthalpy are proportional to changes in tangential speed, and for turbines or compressors with changes in radius, the change in enthalpy is largely due to the change in radius from centrifugal/centripetal effects.

Euler Turbine Equation

Euler Turbine Equation relates the temperature ratio (and hence the pressure ratio) across a
turbine or compressor to the rotational speed and the change in momentum per unit mass.

If angular momentum increases across a blade

row, then
and work was done on the
fluid (a compressor).

If angular momentum decreases across a

blade row, then
and work was done by
the fluid (a turbine).

Conclusions from Euler Turbo-machinery Equation

A Change in total enthalpy is proportional to change in
tangential flow speed or tangential engine speed.
For engines with little change in mean radius (inlet to exit), the
change in total enthalpy is due to change in tangential flow
velocity of the fluid.
Creates a small change in enthalpy of fluid.
For engines with large change in radius, the change in enthalpy
is to a large degree due to the change in radius.
The centrifugal/centripetal effect.
Creates Large change in enthalpy of fluid.
