11 3 Geometric Sequence

This document discusses geometric sequences and how to identify, write formulas for, and find terms in geometric sequences. It provides the definitions that in a geometric sequence, the ratio between consecutive terms is constant, called the common ratio, and examples of identifying common ratios. It gives the recursive and explicit formulas for writing terms in a geometric sequence and works through examples of using the explicit formula. Finally, it defines the geometric mean as the positive square root of the product of two numbers and works through a problem finding a missing term in a geometric mean.

Chapter 11 Section 3

Geometric Sequences

In a geometric sequence, the ratio between consecutive

terms is constant.
This ratio is called the common ratio.
Identifying a Geometric Sequence:
Is the given sequence geometric? If so, find the common ratio.
a)1, 2, 4, 8, Geometric
Geometric
2
Common Ratio: 2

b) 2, -10, 50, -250, ......

-5
Common Ratio: -5

Geometric Sequence Formulas

Recursive Formula:

Explicit Formula:

a1 = a given value, an = an -1
xr

an = a1 x r

n-1

In these formulas, an is the nth term, a is the first term, n is

the number of the term, and r is the common ratio.

Explicit Formula
Write the explicit formula for each sequence.
a1 = 1024 , r = 0.5
a2 = 1024 x 0.5 2 - 1
a2 = 1024 x 0.5 1
a2 = 512

an = a1 x r

n-1

You can find the geometric mean of any two positive

numbers by taking the positive square root of the product of
the two numbers

Geometric mean = product of the 2 numbers

product of the 2 numbers

Find the missing term of the geometric mean.
a) 9180, ____, 255
9180 (255)
2,340,900
Geometric mean= 1530
