4 5 Molarity 1

Unit 4 discusses solution chemistry, focusing on molarity as a measurement of the concentration of a solute dissolved in a solution. Molarity is defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved in 1 liter of solution. A mole is a measurement of molecules or atoms relative to molecular weight, with Avogadro's number defining the number of particles in 1 mole as 6.02 x 1023. Molarity is calculated by determining the molecular weight of a substance from the periodic table, weighing out that many grams which equals 1 mole, and dissolving it into 1 liter of solution.

Unit 4: Solution Chemistry

Content Outline: Molarity (4.5)

I.

WET Chemistry Terminology:

A. Mole (mol)
1. Refers to a measurement of molecules that is relative to its molecular
weight.
2. Avogadros Number is 6.02 x 10.
a. It states the number of atoms or molecules of that particular
substance present in a 1 mole of substance.
3. Find the molecular weight of a molecule using the Periodic Table and
then weigh out that many grams of the substance and that amount is
equal to 1 mole. (Sucrose = 342amu, so I need 342 grams.)
B. Molarity
1. Term for telling how many moles of a substance are dissolved in a
solution (water).
