Executive Summary:
Jasper County Middle School is a Title 1 school located in Monticello, Georgia. There is great
potential for JCMS to become a remarkable 21st century school. The schools mission is to
deliver effective instruction and remediation within a safe environment, so that students have the
best conditions for learning the essential knowledge and skills as measured by national, state, and
local standards. Educating everyone takes everyone.
Organizational Chart:
The chart shown below displays the operation of technology in the Jasper County School
System. After the school superintendent, Dr. Newton, are Mr. Dan Kelley and Mr. Jerry Bunch.
Mr. Kelley deals more with installing, upkeep, and troubleshooting of technology, whereas Mr.
Bunch deals with the instructional aspect of technology. Both play vital roles in implementing
technology in the classroom. Mr. Kelley has two specialists that travel to the schools to fix
technology that has stopped working. The media specialists at each school serve as the
instructional technologists at each school in Mr. Bunchs absence. Mr. Bunch is the instructional
technologist

for the entire Middle

Georgia

RESA, therefore he visits

the schools in

Jasper County about once

every two

weeks.

Methods:
The majority of information in this evaluation report was obtained from Mrs. Mandie Behling,
Jasper County Middle School Librarian. In addition to Mrs. Behling, the Jasper County School
System website provided an adequate amount of information.
Center Context and Goals:
HistoryIn 2007, Jasper County Middle School and Jasper County High School deconsolidated. This left
the middle schools media center with little resources. Although it is nine years later, the middle
schools library still has not replenished fully. This is due to the lack of funds in the county.
Unfortunately, the middle school does not receive any local funds and every resource has been
purchased from fundraisers such as book fairs.
MissionThe mission of the Jasper County Middle School Media Center is to provide students and
teachers learning opportunities and resources to become better readers, thinkers, and learners.
Goals

Stay up to date with technology trends in education.

Enrich the book inventory to cater to all students interests.
Add more teacher resources.
Purchase a 3D printer.

StakeholdersCommunity leaders, parents, administrators, and teachers are all stakeholders in Jasper County
School System.
Key Personnel-

Mrs. Mandie Behling is the school librarian. She is responsible for ordering books and resources
to help students and teachers.
Ms. Donna Wyatt is the media center paraprofessional. She is responsible for ensuring all books
get properly checked in and out and shelved. Ms. Wyatt also does all of the laminating for
teachers and other tasks when needed.
Mr. Jerry Bunch is the regional instructional technologist. He is responsible for ensuring teachers
are abreast of the latest technology that can be utilized in their classrooms.
Center Activities:
Student of the Month Celebrations- The purpose is to encourage good behavior at school.
Students who are chosen will enjoy breakfast with their parents and receive a t-shirt and a
certificate.
Top Reader Celebrations- The purpose is to encourage students to read. Students who are chosen
will enjoy lunch with a friend and receive a certificate.
Evaluation:
The Jasper County Middle School Media Center has many positive aspects but there is also
much room for improvement. One of the major highlights is the welcoming environment. The
media specialist and her parapro make sure all students and teachers who visit the center are
greeted and assisted. The students love completing assignments in the media center and I am
certain their desire to complete projects will enlarge when the MakerSpaces are complete.
When I interviewed the JCMS media specialist, she informed me that the media center did not
have any written mission statement or goals. This initially bothered me because I firmly believe
that in order to be effective you must begin with a goal in mind. However, this assignment

helped me help her. We sat down together and wrote a mission statement and goals for the media
center. I am now a part of the JCMS library history.
The fact that the middle school media center did not receive any local funding was a major loss.
However, it is remarkable how Mrs. Behling compensates through fundraisers. She holds raffles,
student dances, and book fairs to gain funds. She was able to purchase many new books this
school year through raised funds alone.
I feel that much improvement can be made on the technological aspect of the media center.
Because there is not much money, the media center still has many videos and cassettes instead of
DVDs and CDs. There are also no digital books and many outdated books.
Recommendations:
Teacher Professional Development- There is a major need for teacher professional development
at Jasper County Middle School. Teachers could benefit from learning about technology in the
classroom or how to implement books into their curriculum. Although teachers will be pushed
out of their comfort zone, the students will reap the benefits.
Book Club- Reading is a fundamental part of effectively learning. If Jasper County Middle
started a book club it would encourage students to read and give them an incentive. I am certain
that this would help students love reading if they are introduced to the right book and supported
by peers.
AR Celebrations- Accelerated Reader in middle school can be a burden, simply because the
excitement from elementary school has worn off. Due to lack of funding and support, Mrs.
Behling has not been able to do AR celebrations. However, with the right presentation to
stakeholders, I believe this issue can be alleviated.

Grant- There are many grants dealing with technology and funding that can greatly benefit a
media center. It is highly recommended that Mrs. Behling apply for grants to ensure all 21st
century learners are adequately receiving instruction.
