VA Standards of Learning The student will explain the differences between goods and services
and describe how people are consumers and producers of goods and services.
Context This lesson follows students learning about the environment in which people live in.
Therefore, students will learn what goods and services can be provided in the areas where people
live. Additionally, this lesson helps introduce the next lesson which is needs and wants.
Global Themes: Students must learn that the economy revolves around goods and services,
which create producers and consumers. People use goods and services as a way to trade as well
as use money. Goods and services help build the economy.

good/service under the correct column.
After the story, the teacher will have
students turn to his/her neighbor within
10 seconds (timer).

The teacher will ask students to discuss


different goods and services in school, at
home, and in the community. The

students will write answers in their


notebook. The teacher will provide two
example for the students. After 2-3
minutes, the students will share what
they discussed with the class.
The teacher will give the students 10
seconds to get back to their desks. Then

the teacher will present the sort on the


SmartBoard. The teacher will ask
students to come up and place the image
under the good or service column. At the
end, the teacher will hit the check
button. If there are wrong answers, the
teacher will discuss and explain the
correct answer.
