Virtual Field Trip Guide

Grade: 6th

Krystal S. Sam G. Bridgette T.

Introduction:
Students will be shown photos from the Smithsonian Museum. They will be asked to make
predictions based off of what they see in the photo and how the picture could represent
something meaningful that is either current or from the past.
Procedure:
Student will take a virtual field trip through the smithsonian Museum. During this field trip they
will be guided to 4 different exhibits/halls and asked questions about the exhibits. Each exhibit
will have different focused and open exploration questions. The students will fill in their answers
and responses on a worksheet to turn in once they have completed the field trip.
Affective domain of learning:
Specific questions and reflection prompts for each exhibit that the students visit.
Further exploration:
Students who finish early and need further exploration will be guided to view the past exhibits
section of the museum. During this time they will be able to partake in open exploration.

Smithsonian Museum Field Trip


Answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper

For each exhibit that you visit be sure to include an interesting fact that you learned that
you didn't know before the tour.

Go to the first floor of the museum:


Visit the Dinosaur Exhibit:
1. Locate and name 1 dinosaur from the dinosaur exhibit and explain its features and how
they assisted them in survival during that time.
2. Create and sketch your own dinosaur that has clear and defining features that resemble
the dinosaurs you saw while your were touring the exhibit.
Visit the Ancient Sea exhibit:
1. Sketch a picture of five fossils found in this exhibit. Make sure to label the name of each.
2. What was your favorite and least favorite part of this exhibit and why?
Visit the Mammal exhibit:
1. Locate and name all of the animals that are present in the Africa exhibit. In what kind of
environment do these animals live and how is it essential to their survival?
2. Create your own mammal exhibit. Label the animals that would live in it and what kind of
environment it is.
Visit the Ocean Exhibit:
1. Find and define: Phylum Loricifera, Phylum Gastrotricha, and Phylum Gnathostomulida.
2. Go to the Deep Ocean section. After you are done touring this area, write a short story
about discovering a new species of sea animal in the deep ocean. Minimum of one
written page.
