Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez was born in Arizona in 1927 and grew up working as a migrant farm worker, traveling to different areas to pick crops. The conditions for migrant workers were poor, with low wages, substandard housing, and mistreatment by farmers. As an adult, Chavez left farm work and joined the Navy before returning home and founding the United Farm Workers union in 1962 to advocate for better treatment of migrant workers. One of his first major actions was leading a 340 mile march from Delano to Sacramento to protest grape farmers, which brought attention to workers' rights and conditions.

CESAR CHAVEZ

American Hero

Cesar and his family traveled around and

finally settled down in California. Everyone
had to work, even young Cesar. He worked
many different jobs, picking beets, grapes, and
oranges. Despite working so hard, his family
rarely even had enough to eat. Cesar could no
longer attend school. He had to spend his days
working in the fields. He made it to the eighth
grade and then stopped going to school
altogether.
How would you feel about living like Cesar did?

Cesar Chavez was born near Yuma,

Arizona on March 31, 1927.
He lived in Arizona until the age of ten.
His family lost their farm and had to
become migrant farm workers. This
meant they traveled far and wide, living
wherever they could find work picking
fruits and vegetables.

The working conditions for Cesar and his

family were terrible. The farmers
mistreated the workers and did not pay
them fair wages. The living conditions
for the workers were even worse. Houses
were provided for the workers but they
did not have the things they needed. No
heat, running water, and leaky roofs
were just a few of the problems.

Growing up, Cesar saw how badly the

farm workers were treated. He did not
believe that what was happening was
right. As an adult, Cesar left the fields
and joined the Navy. After spending only
two years, he returned home to his
family. He got a new job and started
working toward his next goalgaining
more rights and better conditions for the
farm workers.

It took them several weeks to march the 340 miles.

On the way there people joined them. The crowd
grew larger and larger until thousands of workers
arrived in Sacramento to protest. In the end, the
grape growers agreed to many of the worker's
conditions and signed a contract with the union.
Over time, many changes were made that made
conditions better for the migrant workers.
Cesars dream of equal rights for farm workers had
finally come true.
Why is Cesar Chavez a hero?

In 1962, Cesar quit his job and founded

the United Farm Workers Union. The
union did many things to try and get
better conditions for the farm workers.
One of Cesar's first major actions was to
strike against grape farmers. A strike is
when workers refuse to work. The strike
started in Delano, California. Cesar and
sixty-seven workers decided to march to
Sacramento, the state capital.
