Standard 1

This document summarizes an assignment the author completed on Indigenous Australians in education. The assignment required annotating five texts relating to Indigenous pedagogy. One text annotated was a report forming the basis of the 8ways pedagogy framework. By understanding expert views on Indigenous pedagogy, the author gained knowledge on strategies like using images and stories that improve learning for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The research supported the author's understanding of how Indigenous cultures influence lives and the importance of language and culture in Indigenous pedagogical strategies to help students succeed.

Demonstrate knowledge and

and how these may affect
learning.

This artefact is a
marking sheet and
excerpt from an
assignment I
completed in a unit
called Indigenous
Australians in
Education.

This assignment I completed for

Indigenous Australians in Education
required me to annotate five texts
which in some way related to
Indigenous pedagogy in the classroom.
These texts had to be searched for and
could not be taken from the readings
on the unit site. For this assignment I
achieved a high distinction. The
annotation provided as evidence here
was a report that was the basis for the
8ways pedagogy frameworks creation.

I have demonstrated my
knowledge and
understanding of how
Indigenous students learn by
listing and analysing such
research based pedagogical
strategies as using images,
deconstructing and
reconstructing knowledge
and skills, and utilising
stories. The uses of such
strategies are generally found
by experts to improve
learning for many students
from both Indigenous and
non-Indigenous cultures
(APST 1.1 & 2.4).

1.4 Strategies for

teaching Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander
students
Demonstrate broad
knowledge and
understanding of the impact
of culture, cultural identity
and linguistic background on
the education of students
from Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander backgrounds.

By understanding and analysing the

views of several experts in the area of
Indigenous pedagogy, I am providing
myself with a wealth of knowledge and
skills which I can apply to my
classroom to more effectively assist
Indigenous, and non-Indigenous
students learn. Through the critical
analysis component of each
annotation, I demonstrated my ability

Indigenous Australians both
past and present. Language
is a keystone to Indigenous
cultures, and is the
foundation for many
Indigenous pedagogical
strategies that generally
provide Indigenous students
with the best chance to
succeed. My research has
also supported the fact that
both Indigenous and nonIndigenous students are
unique, and any strategy
used will likely need to be
tailored to suit the individual
situation (APST 1.4 & 2.4).
