Chapter 1
1. What conflicts are arising in the first chapter? List each conflict and state its type. (I.E.
Ev vs. Her Grandmother is a person vs. person conflict)
2. What is your first impression of Ev?
3. Do you think Ev is going to live up to her dare? Why?
Chapter 2
4. How is Evs grandfather different from her Grandmother?
5. On page 31 Ev says Please Mum . . . Couldnt you be the grown-up again? What do
you think she meant by silently whispering this question in her room?
6. Do you think Ev made the right decision to not kiss Peter Tilley? What would you have
done in Evs situation? Do you think Peter and Ev will become friends, or go out?
Chapter 3
7. How is Peter characterized in chapter 3? What do we learn about him?
8. Create a Venn Diagram, label one side Evelyn and the other Peter. Use the diagram to
analyze the similarities and differences between their characters.
9. How did they keep the fairies away?
Chapter 4
10. Why do you think Ev and her grandfather get along so well, in comparision to how her
and her grandmother get along?
11. The librarian at first, treated Ev differently. Then she warmed up to Ev when she found it
she was Dr. McCallums daughter because, as Peter said, she was a bit snobbish. Have
you ever been in a situation like that?
12. Do you think Ev, Peter, and Ches will get along?
Chapter 5
13. How is Ches Barrett characterized?
14. After just joining with Ches and Peter in the building of the boat, Ev has to watch before
she is allowed to participate, have you ever learned a skill by watching someone? (I.E.
Boat Building, Knitting, Cooking)? Explain what it was you learned and who you learned
it from.
15. How do you think Evs relationship with Ches will evolve? Do you think they will get
along or not?

Chapter 6
16. Millie took a hard blow for Ev in the beginning of this chapter, which showed us another
side of her character, have you ever taken the blame for something that you didnt do?
Why did you take the blame?
17. Find an example of imagery in chapter 6 and explain why you think it is an effective
image.

Chapter 7
18. Why were Ev and Peter going into the woods?
19. What happened when Ev went down to the old springhouse? Were you expecting
something strange to happen? Why?
20. In this chapter we get reference to the title, what do you think the title means now?
Chapter 8
21. What does Ches believe happened to Ev?
22. We are about halfway through the novel, write a paragraph about what you think is going
to happen in the second half of the novel.
Chapter 9
23. The conflict between Millie and Gerry is getting worse, what do you think is going to
happen?
24. Foreshadowing is when an author warns of a future event. Do you think the dead
sparrow was foreshadowing harm to Millie?
Chapter 10
25. A simile is a comparison of two unlike nouns (person, place, or thing) using the words
like or as. Find an example of a simile in Chapter 10. Why do you think an author
uses similes? Do you ever use similes? Think: I hit that jump and was flying like an
eagle!
26. Personification is when a non-human thing is given human attributes. Can you find an
example of personification in chapter 10? State the example and page number.
27. Pretend you are Ev and write a journal entry about the news of her father missing in
action (imagine how you would feel). For the boys, if you wish, you can write a note of
hope to Ev from Peter that her father might be found.
Chapter 11
28. How has Evs mother changed in this chapter? What did Mrs. Bursey say caused the
change?
29. How did Evs father help save Millies life?
Chapter 12
30. How did Evs relationship with her mother change in this chapter?
31. Do you think the fairy is going to grant Evs wish?

Chapter 13
32. Imagery is when the author uses the 5 senses to appeal to the reader. Find an example
of imagery in Chapter 13 and explain why you think it is an effective example.
