SRM 5003 ~ Facility Management Debate(s)

Learning Objectives:

Students will be debating positions in opposition to their personal beliefs. Supporting


positions with facts, even if it is not their personal belief, is a skill. Students should learn
how to best defend a fact with supporting material.
Everyone has a role even if they are not one of the people presenting information. This
activity will require 100% participation.
Should must anticipate the counter arguments by the opposition. Learning how to respond
to an opposing point of view will be imperative if you wish to win this debate.
Selling your ideas to an audience. Persuading an audience to consider the point of view
that you are presenting.

Debate Preparation
This individual assignment is to be handed in prior to your schedules debate day.
Components of Individual Preparation Assignment ~ 30 marks

Individual submissions must be professional in appearance and include your own


researched material. Be sure to include a Title Page which clearly states your debate
position (For or Against) on your assigned debate topic.
o 5 marks

Grammar/Spelling
o 5 marks

Four Arguments Supporting or Opposing (depending which debate team you are on)
o 16 marks
o Bulleted format is expected HOWEVER detail is required with personal rationale
o Your Argument IN YOUR OWN WORDS (2 marks each 8 marks total)
o Supporting documentation or examples found in your research for each of the
arguments. Documentation must be included and dont ignore APA standards when
referencing (2 marks each 8 marks total)

One anticipated counter argument by the opposition


o 4 marks total
o State one counter argument that the opposing team will likely use. (2 marks)
o How you will rebut the statement? Supporting documentation/references are required.
(2 Marks)

Debate Day
5% of the final grade will be determined by the audience and based on the attached rubric.
Debate Format
1.

The side that agrees with the statement will present first. 1-2 team members, selected by
the group, will present their information. They will have 7 minutes of uninterrupted time
to present their position. The opposition will be taking notes in order to form a rebuttal.
Be sure to use the entire allotted time as marks will be deducted if you fail to do so.

2.

The side that opposes the statement will present second. 1-2 team members, selected by
the group, will present their information. They will have 7 minutes of uninterrupted time
to present their position. The opposition will be taking notes to form a rebuttal.

3.

The audience will be evaluating opening arguments. Marks will be given for well thought
out questions. Be prepared in advance of debate day with your questions, as well, be
prepared to form questions the day of when the material is presented to you.

4.

Debating teams will be given 10 minutes to form and prepare their rebuttal.

5.

The Rebuttal will begin with the team that opposes the statement. 1-2 different team
members will have a total of 5 minutes to rebut any statements made by the opposition
during the opening round.

6.

The Rebuttal portion will resume with the team that agrees with the statement. 1-2
different team members will have a total of 5 minutes to rebut any statements made by the
opposition during the opening round.

7.

The audience is given the opportunity to ask questions of the two teams. Team members
selected to field questions should be different than those who have presented (if possible).
Time allotment 15 minutes total. A total of 5 questions must be presented by the audience
(5 per side) during this time.

8.

The side that agrees with the statement will be allowed to make their closing statements
first. This is once again a team member who has yet to present information. Time
allotment for closing statements is 1 minute.

9.

The side that disagrees with the statement will be allowed to make their closing statements
last. This is once again a team member who has yet to present information. Time
allotment for closing statements is 1 minute.

10.

The audience will cast their votes on the victor of the debate using the attached forms. The
vote will be confidential and decided by consensus.
