1) Lynne Webbings loses a short story competition to Geoff Bolder and feels disappointed. She later discovers that Geoff's winning story is similar to a story in a book by William Bradburie. 2) Lynne accuses Geoff of cheating but he takes the book to the principal. The principal determines Geoff's story was original enough not to be considered cheating. 3) Lynne is then named the winner instead, since her story was entirely original. However, she begins to doubt her own originality and worries her story may have been inspired by another she read previously.
