Rationale
Teaching concepts of print:
Concepts of print important to show children how books work (Bishop,
Yopp, & Yopp, 2014). Bingeing readers need to know book orientation,
additionality, how to deal with a books and read from it. Its important
for them to acquire these skills at the early ages to be prepared for
reading process.
Concepts of print develop children to read fluently and success in
reading in the future. (Texas Education Agency, 2002). Beginning
readers find these concepts strangers but when know the concepts and
develop more in reading, they'll find them natural.
Its important for children to know that verbal words can be written and
read from left to right, top to bottom (The Ontario Ministry of
Education, 2003). Especially for Arabic students who used to read and
write from right to left.
Concepts of print help children to know the concepts of letters and
words in meaningful reading. Alphabetic principle is the understanding
that words are made up by letters that have sounds (Knighten, 2010).
Its to understand that we make words by putting letters together.
According to Stahl & McKenna, Teachers have to teach the child the
concept of print and alphabetical principle (Hoffman & Showerman).
