Senator Smith Press Release
Today has been a day of pain and great sadness. I am speechless at the actions that
have taken place and deepened with grief for the family, our community, and the state of Ohio.
On Saturday, April 23, 2016 eight family members were brutally murdered and shot
executionally at four different sites. The victims were identified as Hannah Gilley, 20;
Christopher Rhoden Sr., 40; Christopher Rhoden Jr., 16; Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden, 20; Dana
Rhoden, 37; Gary Rhoden, 38; Hanna Rhoden, 19; and Kenneth Rhoden, 44. This event took
place in Piketon, Ohio and Pike County officials have confirmed that three unharmed children
were found at two of the four sites. As the investigation continues, the public has been notified
of a potential factor for the cause of the executions. Pike County officials have found marijuana
grow operations on three of the four sites. Although marijuana was being grown, it has been
said that it was not for personal use. As of right now, officials are still searching for the man,
woman, or group who was responsible for committing such a heinous crime. Along with the
current search for the individual or individuals responsible for the murdering of this family,
officers are unsure of whether marijuana played a part or not, but it is being considered as a
factor.
As a member of the community and a running US Senate candidate, I am deeply
affected by the traumatic effects that have occurred. As the officials continue to investigate this
matter, I ask of you all to show kindness and support the members of this family and all those
affected by this tragedy. As a running candidate, I will do all I can to prevent future events like
this from occurring again. My team and I will propose a policy legalizing marijuana and work
diligently to overcome this barrier. Once again, we stand with the family and the members who
were deeply hurt with these events and ask of the community to support and stand with this
family as much as they can. I, Senator Smith, am deeply sorry for the members that have
demised and the family that has lost so many loved ones. May their souls rest in peace and
humanity shine through these dark times.
