THE LAST YEAR

OCTOBER

SCRABBLE COMPETITION
Six keen scrabble players battled their way to the finals of the
Scrabble Competition at Marina Mall. Jad Oklany (5G) did an
amazing job to win 3rd place and 3000dhs! Well done Jad!

CHESS CHALLENGE
Five experienced chess players were selected to pit their wits against
chess enthusiasts across Dubai at JESS Jumeirah School. Monty,
Advay, Yash (all from 6A), Zihan (5G), and Ayan(4G) our 5 champions
all won some of their matches against some very strong players.

WRITING COMPETITION
Over twenty Year 5 and 6 children entered the Emirates Literature
Festival writing Competition this year, hoping to follow in the
footsteps of Juna Oklany, a former JPS student who was awarded
second place last year in the competition and had her story published.

POETRY COMPETITION
Jasper Clark was thrilled when his poem was awarded second place
in the Emirates Literature Festival Poetry Competition. He becomes
the first JPS student to get his poem published in a LitFest book. Well
done Jasper!

RADIO REVIEWS
Salma Reda and Danyaal Zobarai became the first radio review pair
from JPS to appear live on Dubai Eye Talking books programme. They
spoke eloquently and knowledgeably on Shakespeares plays and
shared their views on the comic strip layout of the book.

MINI ENRICHMENT WRITING


CHALLENGE
2015-16 marks the first year of the Mini Enrichment league, initiated
by JPS. Our first event was the Writing Challenge at JESS Jumeirah. We
were proud of Finley and Alexandra who received certificates for
some excellent collaborative writing.

NOVEMBER

MINI ENRICHMENT SCIENCE


CHALLENGE
The second event of the league was a wonderful science event held at Royal
Dubai School, where our budding scientists had to solve a murder mystery,
using scientific detective work. The Year 3 and 4 team excelled and won their
age group category. Well done scientists!

TREASURES OF THE UAE ART


COMPETITION
Some of our Talented artists entered this competition to create their
own interpretation of famous Dubai landmarks. Jasmine Capaldi in Year 5
was successful and is pictured herewith her winning art, along with other
commended artwork from the JPS artists. Well done all of you.

DECEMBER

WORLD SCHOLARS CUP PRIMARY


45 children across Years 5 and 6 competed in the primary round of
the World Scholars Cup. They collected an amazing total of 70 medals
between them for everything from debating to writing essays and
quizzes on history, social studies, art and much more.

LIVING RAINFOREST WRITING


This was the first time we entered this competition, hoping to gain a
place in the International Final, where we will debate Are sustainable
Cities possible? we eagerly await the results to see if we will be
debating against schools from across the world.

JANUARY

RADIO REVIEWS
Tarini Bahadur and Nonny Haines appeared live on radio this month.
They were reviewing the Minecraft Series. Both girls enjoyed the
experience and brought away sequels to read too.

READERS CUP FIRST ROUND


JPS were pleased to host the first round of the Emirates Literature Chevron Readers
Cup, organised by the Emirates Literature Festival. The two teams from Year 5 and
worked hard reading and remembering as much as they could about 4 books. They
hope to make it through to the finals in March. Watch this space!

BRAINWAYS QUEST
27 children from Years 3 and 6 entered the Brainways competition. Over the last
weekend in January. This is a really challenging competition and we were thrilled when
the results were announced and JPS were 1st and 2nd in the 8-10 age group and 3rd on
the 5-7 age group. Well done JPS, you demonstrated amazing resilience.

FEBRUARY

MINI ENRICHMENT DEBATE CHALLENGE


Murium Mohammad, Saahil Kewalramani, Himakshi Shastri, Imogen O
Conner, Alexandra Hide, Ella Garvey, Ben Rawlings and Zain
Carrimjee all attended the Debate event organised by JPS and hosted
by JESS Ranches. We are thrilled to announce they won first [place in
both the Y3/4 and Y5/6 events. Well done JPS!

WAR OF WORDS
Five strong debaters from Year 5 took to the stage this month for a balloon debate. They were
convincing the judges to keep such notable characters as Louis Pasteur and Mark Zuckerburg in a
hot air balloon in favour of William Shakespeare and Alexander Graham Bell.
The children had to present to a large audience and performed with confidence and poise. Well
done JPS for a great team debate.

POETRY RECITALS
Ruby Sheehan, Sneha Janardhan and Saahil Ramjoo were selected as
our top 3 poetry recital candidates for the Qasidar Par Coeur
Poetry Competition. They recited beautifully in the traditional setting
of the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Heritage Centre and we were very
proud of their efforts.

JC MATHS CHALLENGE
Eight mathematicians from Years 5 and 6 competed in a Maths event organised
by Jumeirah College. They had to solve challenging puzzles, answer mental maths
questions and work as a team in fun games. Seven schools attended the event as
part of our mini enrichment league and JPS battled their way through all the
rounds to win first place. Here they are with the winners certificate. Well done
team JPS!

MARCH

CHEVRON READERS CUP FINAL


For the first time in JPS history, 2 teams qualified to the final of the
Readers Cup. They battled against 16 other teams at Festival Centre
and did really well in two out of the three rounds, however, the case
of the exploding brains had their brains exploding and they came
home with 11th and 14th positions. Well done for all your hard work
studying Readers!

WORLD SCHOLARS CUP

Debaters from Year 6 participated in the WSC for a whole weekend about topics
including whetherLying on the internet should be illegal; All countries should
have the same criminal laws; Dubai would survive a zombie outbreak.

TAALEEM POETRY PRESENTATION


Jasper Clark took centre stage at the Emirates Literature festival
when he was formally recognized and congratulated for his winning
poem, published in the latest Lit fest collection. Well done Jasper!

SEAN FAY WOLF PRESENTATION


Tarini and Nonny, both in Year 6 recently appeared on Dubai Eye
Radio as young book reviewers. Following on from this they were
asked to present the young author Sean Fay Wolfe, the girls had a
great time and were super presenters.

EMIRATES LITFEST AUTHOR VISIT


Students in years 5 and 6 were treated to talks from authors Nick
Arnold and Jacqueline Wilson during the Emirates Literature festival.
Additionally they each created a group canvas whilst at the event
entitled Time look out for the canvases displayed in school!

APRIL

Lots of Artists entered the Room with a View Art competition
here are the selected pieces of Art for the final. We look forward to

Y2 MATHS CHALLENGE DAY


JPS hosted their first Year 2 Maths Challenge event earlier this month.
7 schools from around Dubai attended and the main Hall was buzzing
with the excitement of the day. Students competed in maths
runarounds, maths relays and made new friends when they worked in
teams with children form other schools. JPS A and B team came very
respectable 4th and 5th out of 14 teams. Well done to all our Year 2
students.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES
Twelve students from Years 5 and 6 discussed the question Are
Sustainable cities possible? They spent a week at Masdar city and
Dubai Sustainable building, listening to keynote speakers and joining
debates. We were thrilled to discover that Salma was awarded best
debater and that Veda got an honorary mention. All of the students
amazed the organisers with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

MATHS DAY GAMES


Gifted and Talented mathematicians from Years 1 to 6 created their
own challenging Maths Games on Maths Day.

YEAR 3 MATHS CHALLENGE


Gems Wellington Primary School hosted a Year 3 and 4 Maths
challenge earlier this month. The Year 3 students from JPS who took
part had a great time, gaining fourth place overall in this interschool
mini league event.

UKMT MATHS CHALLENGE


Jumeirah College hosted the annual international Junior UKMT Maths challenge
this month. Selected Year 5 and 6 students from JPS tackled a variety of taxing
problems in the hope of gaining a coveted certificate. Well done to all 40
students selected to take the Challenge, we wait excitedly for the results.
