Class Activity

The document provides instructions for using swept features in SolidWorks to create various spring and helix shapes. It includes steps to create a circular spring using a swept surface and boss, a variable pitch helix, and using the follow path and keep normal constant options for sweeps. It asks students to complete the exercises and submit their work.

1. Circular Spring

Tool used: Swept surface & Swept Boss-Base

Select front plane: Sketch an Arc and add a horizontal relation between
the left and right endpoints. Diameter of Arc: ____3_____
Select right plane, open a new sketch with a horizontal line towards the
right. Length of Line: _____1.323_____
Creating a swept surface: inset/surface/sweep
o Option: twist along path; define by turns, number of turns:
_30___
Sketching the wire-diameter: sketch a circle.
o Which plane you choose for this profile:__right____
o Diameter of circle: ____.068_____

2. Create the following circular spring:

Post your steps here:

Draw the first 180 arc and then mirror it, then you follow the same steps with
the arc spring. Although it obviously goes 360 instead of 180. Same goes for
the circle sweep base, you simply draw the circle on the right plane.
3. Variable Pitch

In Helix-spiral with a diameter of 1.0 in, select Pitch and Revolution,

variable pitch.
Enter the values for pitch, revolutions, and diameters:

Use circle with a diameter of 0.1 in to sweep along the path
Sketch a rectangle (3.315x1.5) on top plane which goes through the
middle of both ends
Extruding cut:
o set direction 1 to through all,
o set direction 2 to through all
o Enable the flip side to cut checkbox

Post your steps here:

Simply use the variable pitch and punch in the numbers from the chart above. After
creating the helix from the 1 in. circle sketch. Then youll want to draw another
circle sketch on the right plane on the edge of the helix. Then sweep base, which
will then give you the spring. Now you simply need to make a rectangle using the
origin as the center point, and put it off by the distance of the other midpoint of the
other side of the spring. Now you simply extrude cut which will give you your cut for
your compression spring.
