Elements are pure substances containing only one type of atom that cannot be separated into simpler materials. Compounds are pure substances containing two or more types of atoms that are chemically combined in a uniform way and cannot be separated through physical means alone. Mixtures contain two or more elements or compounds that are not chemically combined and do not undergo chemical reactions.

Elements, Compounds & Mixtures Worksheet

Part 1: Read the following information on elements, compounds and

mixtures. Fill in the blanks where necessary.
Elements:
A pure substance containing only one kind of __atom____.
An element __cannot___ be separated into simpler materials.
Over 100 existing elements are listed and classified on the _Periodic
Table_.
Compounds:
A pure substance containing two or more kinds of __atoms__.
The atoms are ___chemically___ combined in some way.
A compound is always homogeneous (uniform).
Compounds ___cannot___ be separated by physical means.
Separating a compound requires a chemical reaction.
The properties of a compound are usually different than the
properties of the elements it contains.
Mixtures:
Two or more __elements___ or ____compounds__ NOT chemically
combined.
No reaction between substances.
Part 3: Match each diagram with its correct description. Diagrams will be
used once.

_E_2. Mixture of two elements two types of uncombined atoms present.
_B_3. Compound only one type of compound present.
_A_4. Mixture of two compounds two types of compounds present.

_D_5. Mixture of a compound and an element.
