1. Write a short essay (200 words) entitled "What happens in the cognitive classroom?

"
Remember to consider the main principles of Cognitivism.

What happens in the cognitive classroom?

Noam Chomsky, a linguist and cognitive scientist, rejected the structuralist approach
and the behaviourist theory and advocated that language is a set of rules and everybody is
equipped with Language Acquisition Device which is used in acquiring the first language.
The theory that he proposed was similar to cognitivists approach. According to this theory,
one question can be asked. What happens in the cognitive classroom?
In the cognitive classroom there is no learning by heart. Everything should be taught
in connection with previous knowledge. Students should use brainstorming and conscious
analysis in their learning. A teacher plays a very important role because he is an advanced
organiser for learners. The teacher should provide vocabulary in topics or groups so it creates
a system in students brain. But learners are the most important people in the classroom, not
the teacher.
What is more, it is essential to remember that form without a meaning is not a
language. If meaning cannot be grasped in L2, L1 can be used for translations. Graphics such
as pictures, drawings or even short videos make learning rapid and pleasant.
Last but not least, the teacher should introduce meaningful drills in the cognitive
classroom because it makes learning more memorable and, also, give his students freedom of
learning.
