Lesson 2 For E-Portfolio

This document provides instructions for students to make a triangular pyramid and calculate its surface area. Students are asked to: 1) Make a triangular pyramid with their class. 2) Calculate the area of the base triangle. 3) Calculate the area of one of the lateral faces. 4) Identify that the bases of the three lateral triangles are all equal. 5) Calculate the total area of the three lateral triangles. 6) Add the areas from steps 2 and 5 to find the total surface area of the pyramid.

Making Triangular Pyramids and Surface Area

In this activity, you will be making a triangular pyramid and finding the surface area of
that triangular pyramid.
1. Make your triangular pyramid. This will be done together as a class.
2. Find the area of the BASE TRIANGLE (the triangle at the bottom of the
pyramid). Fill in the lines below with the appropriate information and find the
area:

Area =

x _______________x _____________= __________ units2

3. Find the area of ONE OF THE LATERAL FACES (one of the triangles
that IS NOT THE BASE TRIANGLE). Fill in the lines below with the
appropriate information and find the area:

Area = x _____________________x __________________ =

_________________units2
4. All of the sides of the base triangle are equal. What does that
mean the base of the other three triangles are? Answer on the
line below.
Base: ______________________ units
5. When finding the surface area of pyramids, each of the LATERAL
triangles is the same. Since there are 3 LATERAL triangles, how
can we find the area of all 3? Fill in the information below and
find the area of all the triangles:
Area of ALL the triangles =

_________________ x (

x _________________ x __________________).

6. Add the number you got for #5 to the number you got for #2 to
find the surface area of the triangular pyramid.

Surface area of the triangular pyramid:

_______________________________units2
