Engineering CH 8

The document summarizes the manufacturing processes used at New Balance's factory to produce shoes. It discusses seven key processes: separating, forming, assembling, molding/casting, conditioning, finishing, and quality control. For example, separating involves dividing raw materials into smaller pieces, while assembling is the process of putting components together. The document also answers questions about trade-offs in production, batch vs assembly line processes, the roles of engineers in testing prototypes, and how the seven processes could be applied to factories producing birdhouses or coffee mugs.

Chapter 8

Questions & Answers

Question 1
Chris discussed seven manufacturing
processes: separating, forming,
assembling, molding and casting, finishing,
and quality control. What are these
processes, and how is each process used in
the New Balance factory?

Separating- when large amounts of raw

materials are divided into smaller
pieces to work with.
assembling- the process of putting
things together
molding/casting- the forming of liquid
rubber or plastic
conditioning- using temperature and
chemicals to change the product
finishing- the final treatments that are
down to the shoe
quality control- testing the shoes to
make sure they achieve their purpose

Question 2

Whats a trade-off? What is one

trade of that the New Balance
management makes?

A trade off is when one aspect of

manufacturing is maximized and
another is lessened. Like durability
to cost of materials for new
balance shoes.

Question 3

What processes in the New

Balance factory involve batch
production, and what processes
involve assembly line-style
production?

The assembly of the shoe.

Question 4

Robert Hartmann talked a lot

about the importance of
teamwork. Who are the
members of the team involved
in R&D at New Balance? Are
they all engineers?

The members of the team are not all

engineers they bring in a wide range of
knowledge to get a knowledgeable
opinion of the goal and design of the
product.

Question 5

How do some engineers at New

Balance test prototypes?

The engineers test for

appearance/appeal and the
structural strength.

Question 6
Youve just been hired as a consultant
to a factory that makes wooden
birdhouses. List the seven
manufacturing processes mentioned
in the chapter, and write how each
process might be used in the factory.

Separating- cutting the wood to size

Forming- shaping and sanding the
wood
Assembling- nailing or glueing things
together
Molding/casting- shaping the
accessory materials
Conditioning- testing the strength and
support
Finishing- painting the house
quality control- putting stress on the
house

Question 7
Youve just been hired as consultant
to a second factory. This factory
makes ceramic coffee mugs. List the
seven manufacturing processes
mentioned in this chapter, and write
how each process might be used in
this factory.

Separating- preparing the clay

Forming- molding the clay
Assembling- putting the handles on
Molding/casting- shaping the mug
Conditioning- heating the clay
Finishing- painting it
quality control- putting stress on the
mug
