Exhibit A
Name: World Religions-Diverse Societies
Audience Level: Grade 5
Outcomes:
Students will understand cultural
differences among societies

Students will gain understanding of social

systems and how it influences individuals

Exhibit Title: Foundations of religions using digital

and visual literacies
Resources:

iPads or computers
Headphones
Cloze Worksheet for webquest
Drawing supplies

The focus of this exhibit is for students to gain knowledge about the religions of
Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism. With the background knowledge
obtained in this exhibit students will be able to relate the religions with cultural practices and
societies around the world. In the first foundational part of the task, students will be searching
for answers to basic beliefs for each of the five religions in a webquest activity. The webquest
gives students the chance to use their visual and digital literacies, while engaging kinesthetically
on their iPads. Searching for answers on their own engages students in their learning. For those
who struggle with digital literacies, a list of websites to use for navigation can be posted. It is
this foundational task that will build the lesson, so that students have the background knowledge
needed for later application (Colding, n.d.). After completing the task, students will get right to
work finding common beliefs between the five religions, and also what makes them so different.
In the second part of the exhibit students will be developing their theories about how the
religions have an impact on society through symbolism. Students will first see visuals of the

religious symbols and write about what they think it means and how they feel about it. After
writing about their own connections to the symbol, they will go to the online site and click on the
symbol to find out the meaning. In this developmental stage, the students will then have a choice
of projects to create that best suit their multiple intelligences. Students can create a symbol of
their own, make a collage of symbols, or replicate a current religious symbol and add detail.
This way students have the chance to show connections to society and apply their knowledge to
create something new. Exhibit A is designed for the first two levels of layered curriculum as
students of all skill levels can gain foundational skills and develop their knowledge through
application.

For the first part of

Exhibit A students will
complete a webquest
to get their
foundational
information.
