Essential VII is necessary for the student to learn about health among a population and methods to improve the populations health. The course focuses on the population as a unit of care and how healthy the unit as a whole is. Health promotion and disease prevention NURS491/495 Population Focused Practice fulfilled the requirement for Essential IIV in the RNBSN Nursing Program at Frostburg State University. Exemplar This project- Community Health Assessment fulfils the requirement for NURS491/495 because it used an epidemiological study to show how the lifestyle, genetic and environmental factors are determinants for the health of a population. Culture, spirituality and other factors were studied to see their impact on the community. Environmental health risks were also studied to see if there were potential risks to the communitys health. The communitys resources for health prevention and promotion were also explored. Reflection This project was necessary to study the health of a community- Woodsboro, Maryland. The community had a good amount of resources, with a grocery store, a doctors office and many churches within the town. The average age was 44 and it had an unemployment rate of around 5.4%, the average commute time was 31 minutes. There were many recreational sites around the area. There were many concerns, such as having high traffic in the area which could contribute to motor vehicle accidents. Smoking and obesity were also concerns for the community, which have many impacts on the individual and also the communitys health.
