E-Folio Essential VII

Essential VII is necessary for the student to learn about health among a population and
methods to improve the populations health. The course focuses on the population as a unit of
care and how healthy the unit as a whole is. Health promotion and disease prevention
NURS491/495 Population Focused Practice fulfilled the requirement for Essential IIV in the RNBSN Nursing Program at Frostburg State University.
Exemplar
This project- Community Health Assessment fulfils the requirement for NURS491/495
because it used an epidemiological study to show how the lifestyle, genetic and environmental
factors are determinants for the health of a population. Culture, spirituality and other factors
were studied to see their impact on the community. Environmental health risks were also
studied to see if there were potential risks to the communitys health. The communitys
resources for health prevention and promotion were also explored.
Reflection
This project was necessary to study the health of a community- Woodsboro, Maryland.
The community had a good amount of resources, with a grocery store, a doctors office and
many churches within the town. The average age was 44 and it had an unemployment rate of
around 5.4%, the average commute time was 31 minutes. There were many recreational sites
around the area. There were many concerns, such as having high traffic in the area which could
contribute to motor vehicle accidents. Smoking and obesity were also concerns for the
community, which have many impacts on the individual and also the communitys health.
