Questions & Answers
Question 1
In your own words, write a paragraph explaining how the museums electrical
system would work if an electrical blackout happened.
Answer 1
Answer will vary. The answer could explain that when a blackout occurs, an UPS
system keeps the power up long enough for a generator to start functioning and
provide power to essential systems.
Question 2
What is a short circuit? Why can short circuits be dangerous?
Answer 2
A short circuit is an accidental lower-resistance connection that bypasses the load
or the resistance in a circuit. This is dangerous because in a short circuit the
current follows the path of least resistance, such as a metal bar, another
conductor, or a persons body. This causes resistance to drop and the voltage to
remain constant, which makes the current very strong.
Question 3
What is an alternating current? What is direct current? What kinds of devices
require AC and what kind require DC?
Answer 3
Electric generators produce AC. DC flows in one direction. Most electrical devices
require AC, but some use DC.
Question 4
Draw a diagram of a circuit with three resistors connected in parallel. Calculate the
total resistance in the parallel circuits you drew if each resistor has a resistance of
3 Ohms.
Answer 4
Question 5
Draw a diagram of a circuit with three loads connected in series. Calculate the
total resistance in the series circuit you drew if each load has a resistance of 3
Ohms.
Answer 5
Question 6
Use Ohms law to calculate the current in the series above if the voltage is 15
volts.
Answer 6
V = I x R
I = 15V/9 = 1.67 A
and
I = V/R
