Surface Area Formulas

This document provides formulas for calculating the surface areas of various geometric shapes including rectangular and triangular prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres. It defines the net of a solid cone and explains that one quadrant of a sphere is equal to eight sectors of a circle to derive the surface area formula of a sphere as 4πr^2.

Rectangular Prism

SA = 2 ( lw + lh + wh )
Cube
SA = 6 ( s 2 )
Triangular Prism
SA = ab + bh + ch + dh
SA = ab + 3 (bh)
Triangular Pyramid
SA = 2ab
Square Pyramid
SA = b2 + 2ab
Rectangular Pyramid
SA = lw + al + hw
Cylinder
SA = 2 ( r2) + 2r h
SA = 2 r ( r + h)
Cone
The net of a solid cone consist of a small circle and a sector of a larger circle. The arc of
the sector has the same length as the circumference of the smaller circle.
SA = r ( r + h)
Sphere
If the sphere and a circle have the same diameter, one quadrant of a sphere is equal to
eight sectors of a circle.
If 8 sectors are pasted on a sphere, they will occupy exactly one quadrant of the sphere.
Surface area of the sphere
= 4 r2
