Assignment 2 Lesson Plan 1
Assignment 2 Lesson Plan 1
Level 5
Students will be able to identify and compare basic fractions and justify how they are
represented in a chart.
Standard/s
Level 5
Students order decimals and unit
fractions and locate them on a
number line. Students add and
subtract fractions with the same
denominator.
-Investigate strategies to
solve problems
involving addition and
subtraction of fractions
with the same
denominator (VCMNA1
88).
(Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority, AusVELS Curriculum, May 2016)
Childrens Prior Learning (what do the children already know/what have they covered?)
The students will bring with them knowledge about fractions learnt from level 4 of the Victorian Curriculum:
Mathematics. Numbers & Algebra, Sub-strand: Fractions and Decimals.
This is the first time this topic has been introduced into the classroom this year.
The students will bring with them knowledge from their home life in sorting things fairly such as food and
drinks as well as experiences in the classroom where they have to share things fairly and effectively.

Session Structure
Lesson Phase
Orientation /Introduction
10 mins
o Introduce fractions and play the introduction video so that the students
can remember and are familiar with basic fractions
o Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT1WuyxTCmo
o Brainstorm ideas as a whole class and create an anchor chart (see
example in lesson 1 examples below) highlighting what is a fraction,
vocabulary used, and examples of different types of fractions. This will
be used as a major reference point for the students so that if they are
confused or do not understand something, they can look at this chart
which could lead them on to the right path.
o Use examples that the students can relate to in real life to eg. Slices of
pizza, the number of drinks to share.
o Give students 1 minute to draw as many different ways as possible.
See what the results bring.

o Where the folds are made on each paper, the students will use a
pencil/texta to draw down each folded line. Students will then label
each area on the fraction they make- for example, 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8 etc

Assessment Strategies
What are the assessment
strategies used throughout
this lesson? These should be
closely aligned to your
lesson aims. How you will
you record student learning
outcomes?
Lesson Planner
o Bring all students together and ask questions that could erase the
misconceptions that the students may have. E.g What is larger? 2/16 or
1/8?
o Discuss with students things that they learnt during the lesson that they
had not previously known.
o Finish off with giving the students 1 minute to draw as many
different ways as possible (compare to the first drawing they did).
