classroom. No two students are the same, which means that no two
students will learn in exactly the same way. For this reason, our
teaching must reflect the differences in learning that each of our
students display. Susan G. Cox expands on this idea by stating that
differentiation is important in the elementary years because students
early experiences have a profound impact on their views of school,
their understanding of the learning process, and their views of
themselves as learners (2008, p. 52). With these ideas in mind, I
decided to base my action research on differentiated reading centers
during my class reading time. This became a topic that I was
passionate about as I realized the support that my students needed in
their reading abilities. I wanted students to learn how to be successful
while working independently, and wanted this work to be differentiated
to fit individual needs. This led me to my question: What happens
when I implement differentiated reading centers in my first grade
classroom? In order to answer this question, I had to ensure that the
necessary components of this instructional time were entirely
incorporated. Through my literature review, I found these imperative
components to be cooperative learning structures, independent
learning, flexible grouping, and accountability and engagement.
