2 2 Common Core

The document describes a practicum experience where the candidate served on a middle school ELA Common Core committee to align the 6th grade ELA curriculum to the Common Core Standards. As part of this work, the candidate helped select anchor novels for each nine-week period and develop essential questions for the first novel. The committee then mapped the standards to the novel, created long-range lesson plans considering student diversity and technology, and presented the unit to teachers. The experience provided the candidate familiarity with the Common Core Standards and input into lessons they will teach.

Time: 50 hours
Description: I served on the Middle School ELA Common Core Committee. The
committee aligned the 6th grade ELA curriculum with the Common Core Standards. This
included choosing novels for each nine weeks that integrated with the science and social
studies curriculum.

Reflection: The first thing the committee was required to do was the selection of novels for
each nine weeks. After we chose novels for each nine weeks, I had to assist with the development
of essential questions for the first nine weeks anchor novel, Wonder. After I read the novel, we
discussed possible literature that went with the anchor novel and the theme, Personal Growth
through Change. Once the committee read the novel, we divided the pages of the book and
decided on what common core standards went best with the pages. A curriculum map was
designed and then the long range lesson plans were created. When writing the long range lesson
plans, we had to consider UDL strategies and what accommodations/modifications could be made
for students of varying cognitive abilities and learning styles. Also, we implemented technology to
meet the STEM requirements. At the beginning of the school year, the committee had to present
the unit. During the presentation, we provided an electronic copy of the unit to all 6th grade
teachers. The middle schools piloted the first unit this school year during the first nine weeks. The
goal is to have four units of instruction at each grade level, 6-12, which teachers will implement
by fall of 2013 in preparation for the PARCC assessment (Partnership for the Assessment of
Readiness for College and Career). I am glad I had the opportunity to serve on this committee,
because I became familiar with the Common Cores State Standards and had some input on lessons
I am expected to teach.
