What did you learn about teaching or learning from this lesson? Discuss your
observation focus, and the theory you have studied in your TESOL classes. Consider
the three levels of teacher reflection (surface, pedagogical, critical). (100-300 words)
: In this observation, I focused on the teacher and the learners. First, students
were highly motivated and activated during the class and also had the proficiency in
following the lecture given. The teacher was highly skilled to teach the advanced level
and also to motivate the students at that level. The teachers demeanor was very
straight to the lecture, and he had calm voice and tone. Since it was 700 level IEP
class, he did not use much body languages to help students understanding. However,
the instructor continuously checked if students were following the lecture and then he
also responded to students questions appositely. From these, I learned how to
motivate students to participate actively in the class, and how to interact with students
to help their comprehension in the instruction.
What activities/techniques from this class do you want to remember for your own
teaching practice? Discuss your future teaching environment and your students
needs/goals. Discuss specific ways in which you could adapt and apply the techniques
and methods you saw. (100-300 words)
: The teacher continuously encouraged students to take part in the class by
saying positive things to them. Also, the atmosphere of the classroom was pretty good
to express students thoughts freely. For my own teaching practice, I would like to apply
the techniques that I learned from this teacher such as giving tips when students get
stuck on writing or complimenting students to make them to engage more in the class.
For instance, I would like to use expressions like almost, close when students
responded to the lecture but are not exactly correct and still close enough. I believe this
increase the students confidents and also make the natural atmosphere to participate
in the class.
