Unit 2

The document contains 10 questions related to heat transfer and finite element analysis. Specifically, it asks the reader to: 1. Determine shape functions and coordinates for triangular elements 2. Assemble strain-displacement matrices for triangular elements 3. Calculate stiffness matrices for plane stress elements 4. Determine stresses, strains, and principal angles for plane stress elements 5. Calculate nodal temperatures for 1D heat transfer problems using finite elements. The questions provide element geometries, material properties, boundary conditions and ask the reader to analyze heat transfer and stresses/strains using finite element formulations for bars, walls and fins. Answers are requested for each question.

PART-B

1. Determine the shape functions N 1, N 2, and N3 at the interior

point P for the triangular element shown in fig.

Ans.

2. The nodal co- ordinates of the triangular element are shown in

Fig. At the interior point P, the x co-ordinate is 3.5 and N 1 =

0.4, Calculate N 2, N 3, and the y co-ordinate at point P.

Ans.

3. Determine the x and y co-ordinate of point P for the triangular

element shown in Fig. The shape functions N 1 , and N 2 are
0.2 and 0.3 respectively.

Ans.

4. For the constant strain triangular element shown in Fig.

assemble strain-displacement matrix. Take t = 20 mm and E =

2 x 105 N/mm2.

Ans.

5. Calculate the stiffness matrix for the elements shown in Fig.

The co-ordinates are given in units of millimetres. Assume

plane stress conditions. Take E = 2.1 x 10 5 N/mm2 , Poissions

ratio = 0.25, t = 10mm.
Ans.

6. For the plane stress element shown in Fig. The nodal

displacements are:
u 1 = 2.0 mm v 1 = 1.0 mm;
u 2 = 0.5 mm v 2 = 0.0 mm ;
u 3 = 3.0 mm

v 3 = 1.0 mm ;

Determine the element stresses x , y , xy , 1 and 2 and

the principal angle p Let E = 210 GPa , = 0.25 and t = 10
mm. All co-ordinates are in millimetres.

Ans.

W/mK. The wall is to be insulated with a material of
thickness 0.06 m having an average thermal conductivity of
0.3 W/mK. The inner surface temperature is 1000C and
outside of the insulation is exposed to atmospheric air at 30C
with heat transfer coefficient of 35 W/ m2K. Calculate the
nodal temperatures.
Ans.

8. A furnace wall is made up of three layer, inside layer with

thermal conductivity
8.5 W/mK, the middle layer with
conductivity 0.25 W/mK, the outer layer with conductivity
0.08W/mk. The respective thickness of the inner, middle and
outer layer are 25 cm, 5 cm and 3 cm respectively. The inside
temperature of the wall is 600C and outside of the wall is
exposed to atmospheric air at 30 C with heat transfer
coefficient of 45 W/ m2K. Determine the nodal temperature.

temperature 20C with a convection coefficient of h=100 W/
m2C.Dertermine the temperature at the midpoint of the rod.
