Biography
Martin Yan was born on December 22, 1948 into a culinary
family. His dad was a restaurant owner and his mother
was a grocer. As a child, he has always had a passion for
food.
His formal entry into the culinary world began at age
thirteen with and apprenticeship at a Hong Kong
restaurant followed by Hong Kongs Overseas Institute of
Cookery. After that he moved to the U.S starting his
studies in food science at UC Davis.
A pioneer in the debut of his TV show, Yan Can Cook,
captured his new audience. From then on his career
skyrocketed. Today he lives in San Mateo with his wife
Susan, and their sons, Colin and Devin.

Career Path
With ancestral roots in Taishan, Guangdong, China, Yan
was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong. Yan began to cook at
the age of 12.
He moved to Hong Kong when he was 13, and attended
the Munsang College in Kowloon City. During this time in
Munsang College, he worked at his uncle's Chinese
restaurant and learned about the traditional method of
Chinese cooking there.
He received a diploma from the Overseas Institute of
Cookery of Hong Kong and later left for Canada for
continued study. Ten years after his arrival in North
America, Yan received a Master of Science degree in food
science from University of California, Davis, in 1975.
